Farragut TennesseeThe Basics

The Goodman Center is a holistic wellness center in Knoxville, Tennessee that offers treatment for mental health, substance abuse and weight management. Substance abuse treatment takes a harm reduction approach, and treatment includes an analysis of the nutritional and physiological needs of each client. The Goodman Center opened its doors in December of 2015 and is one of the few outpatient facilities in the region to offer Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) plans using Vivitrol and The Sinclair Method, which uses Naltrexone.

Treatment and Staff

Clients first have an intake session with a physician or nurse practitioner where they’ll discuss their medical history and have blood drawn to determine nutritional deficiencies. They’ll also meet with a psychiatric nurse practitioner and a Master’s-level therapist—such as an MSW or LPC—to discuss mental health issues and Vivitrol use.

Most treatment plans are six to nine months in duration. During that time, clients have individual therapy at least once a week and group therapy once a week. They also have a consultation with a physician or nurse practitioner once a month and massage therapy once a week. Clients have an injection of Vivitrol every 28 days.

Therapy at The Goodman Center uses CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and mindfulness techniques. Clients in need of treatment for PTSD can also receive EMDR sessions. The Tuesday evening therapy group addresses recovery issues, coping skills and relationship issues. Family members are welcome to attend.

Twelve-step meetings are not a requirement of treatment, but a client’s primary therapist helps them locate any peer support meetings in the community that they’d like to participate in.

Extras

Once clients near the end of their treatment plans, therapists do comprehensive aftercare planning with them that may include on-going therapy as well as quarterly visits to the Center’s nurse practitioner for medication. Family and couples therapy is also available for loved ones who wish to participate in treatment.

The Center often opens treatment groups to the public to facilitate community education and helps clients locate state funding sources.

In Summary

The Goodman Center’s harm reduction approach includes talk therapy, massage therapy, nutritional counseling and MAT using Vivitrol and Naltrexone.  Clients experience highly-customized treatment from a variety of approaches in which they learn how to make new behavioral choices and build a satisfying life in recovery.
