The Girls Refuge Review

The Girls Refuge is a short term residential treatment facility that is operated by the Sydney, Australia’s Detour House. The Girls Refuge offers help to adolescent girls who are struggling with substance abuse, are at risk for homelessness or are experiencing a mental health crisis. The Girls Refuge provides a safe place to get support while receiving comprehensive case management assistance, and since 1975 has provided their services to about 200 each year.

Accommodations and Food

The residential facility is set in a large, private home that has eight beds total. Clients share bedrooms and bathrooms, along with the common areas like the living room, dining room and kitchen. The Girls Refuge is home-like and furnished comfortably. Clients have access to a TV, computer and WiFi.

All the food is provided. Residents learn how to prepare their own meals as part of the program. During the week they take turns making dinner for each other.

Treatment and Staff

The program is short term–only about three months long—and designed for those who are between the ages of 13 and 17. Within this time frame all the younger clients go to school Monday through Friday. Older clients either take college classes or attend vocational training.

Throughout treatment, clients can expect weekly individual case management sessions. They also have the option of counseling to address past traumas like child abuse or domestic violence.

A typical week includes household chores and at least one in-house lecture or workshop. These workshops cover overall wellness, legal advice, housing options and resources for additional medical or addiction treatment.

Throughout their stay in the house the clients work on life skills, building on communication, and setting boundaries.

The staff of The Girls Refuge includes case managers, social workers, and youth support counselors.

Extras

During the weekend clients can have friends and family visit, and clients can leave the facility as long as they make it back by curfew. There are also activities and outings that the staff takes the clients out on a weekly basis.

In Summary

The Girls Refuge, just like Detour House, is an excellent and supportive program for those who are either in a state of crisis, in danger of becoming homeless, or struggling with mental health or addiction. It’s a safe place to call home for a short amount of time. This program offers both proper services to accommodate the clients’ needs, and family support. The Girls Refuge is a saving grace for the young women who really need it.
