The Basics
The Gary Center is a non-profit organization located in La Habra, California. The Stafford family established Gary Center in 1971, in memory of their son Gary who died as a result of his drug abuse. It began as a walk-in drug counseling facility and has since expanded its services to provide affordable behavioral health programs to residents living in Orange County and the surrounding areas. Their structured outpatient treatment programs can accommodate Spanish and Korean language speakers, with services available to adults and teens struggling with chemical dependency and mental health disorders. Treatment includes individual and group therapy, along with mandatory 12-step participation.
Treatment and Staff
Upon beginning treatment at Gary Center, clients undergo an evaluation with a therapist. From the evaluation, individualized treatment plans can be developed that include individual therapy (scheduled based on need), weekly group therapy sessions and active 12-step participation. Dual diagnosis support is offered.
Gary Center offers a 38 week substance abuse program to adults ages 18 and over. All adult clients are required to attend at least 38 outside support group meetings during treatment. Adults receiving treatment must attend two group therapy sessions a week, held back to back every Tuesday night. The groups take place from 6 to 8:45 pm and LADCs cover topics such as the disease of addiction, relapse prevention, coping skills and chemical dependency education.
Teens ages 13 to 17 seeking treatment at Gary Center are provided a 19-week substance abuse program which consists of one group therapy session a week. The group is held for an hour at a time on Thursday evenings starting at 6 pm. During group time, clients delve into topics similar to those discussed in the adult program, with the inclusion of childhood trauma, trust and psychoeducation on building self-esteem.
Staff members at Gary Center include licensed therapists and LADCs. Treatment consists of evidence-based modalities like CBT and DBT along with 12-step principles and psychoeducation.
Extras
Gary Center provides a Food Distribution program to qualified La Habra residents in need Fridays from 9 to 11 am.
There are also free legal consultations available every Friday from 10 am to noon. Individuals in need of legal advice pertaining to issues such as labor and employment, family law and civil litigation are advised to call and make an appointment for further assistance.
For uninsured women over 50, Gary Center partners with the YMCA to provide free mammograms on alternating Fridays, once a month.
