Located near Tupelo, Mississippi in the picturesque and historic Natchez Trace area, Extra Mile Recovery is a long-term residential treatment facility for men. While Extra Mile is located in a rural area, it’s only 13 miles from downtown Tupelo. With beginnings as a sober living, the inpatient program is designed to help those struggling with alcohol and drug abuse find recovery, through a combination of 12-step and evidence-based modalities.
Accommodations and Food
Extra Mile Recovery can accommodate as many as 25 men, either in one of four apartments or seven cabins. The cabins have two bedrooms and one bathroom and are equipped with a stove, refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. All linens are provided and there is central air conditioning. The living rooms are furnished with ottomans, club chairs, and fireplaces. The apartments are either two bedrooms and one bath or one bedroom with a bath, and the amenities are the same as in the cabins. There is a club house on the premises where residents and staff gather for activities, fellowship and 12-step meetings.
Treatment and Staff
Extra Mile Recovery is meant to be a long-term program. Although it has 30 and 60-day programs, 90 days is recommended to fully provide clients with the tools for life-long recovery. All admissions begin with a thorough evaluation to determine the client’s physical and psychological health as well as their current and past substance use. Ambulatory detox can be facilitated on-site.
Clients can expect to regularly participate in individual and group therapy, which are required every week. Therapeutic approaches include CBT, DBT and EMDR. Groups can be gender-specific and there are resources for those dealing with co-occurring disorders in addition to chemical dependency. Medication management can be facilitated for those facing a dual diagnosis. Clients can also expect nutritional guidance, mentorship, life skills training, psycho-education and anger resolution therapy.
The Extra Mile has several “zero tolerance” rules, including: no sexual activity, violence, substance or alcohol use, stealing, possession of weapons, or threats. If any resident violates any one of these rules, they are discharged immediately.
Most of the program staff have spent years in recovery, so they understand the struggles residents experience. The owner/program director holds several certifications, including CADC. The program therapist has an LPC and a CADC license.
Meditation and spirituality are considered major parts of the programming here. Clients are led in guided meditation. Extra Mile promotes whole-person healing. The clinical director specializes in treating core problems, specifically trauma-related, in addition to a 12 step immersion program. The team wants clients to heal from the inside out to prevent relapse and experience a life in recovery.
Staff can assist residents with a plan for aftercare. In fact, Extra Mile Recovery has a sister sober living through Brightside Sober Living in Austin Texas.
Extra Mile Recovery offers a rustic and rural ambiance with a professional and thoughtful program. Its origins as a sober living inspired the decision to create a resource for those who need intense, well structured residential care in order to establish a firm footing in sobriety. Through the implementation of 12-step recovery principles, trauma-informed care, holistic measures and dual diagnosis support, this facility boasts a very well-rounded approach to addiction treatment.
