The Basics

Since 1993, The Emily Program has been known as a leader in eating disorder treatment, offering a series of programs for adolescents and adults from residential to outpatient tracks. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania location specifically offers outpatient services that include eating disorder assessments and individual and group therapy, as well as an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). This location is open to all genders and treats adolescents and adults who are in need of recovery support for their anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder and for those who are dealing with behavioral health concerns.

Treatment and Staff

Incoming clients go through an assessment process to determine their level of need. If it appears the individual would benefit from the residential program initially, the Pittsburgh location isn’t far from the Cleveland Heights facility in Ohio. If the IOP or standard OP is the next step, clients discuss their treatment goals with their therapist and are given an individualized treatment plan. The IOP entails up to four days a week in treatment for about three hours at a time. The standard outpatient is entirely reliant on the client’s schedule and their goals.

The IOP includes a series of group sessions and as many individual sessions as needed. Frequent nutritional assessments and counseling is an essential part of the program in addition to psychological evaluations and medication management (if necessary). Throughout the program, clients are encouraged to work or go to school while applying the valuable life skills they are learning in treatment. Treatment methods includes CBT, DBT and Family Systems Therapy. Groups address body image issues, self esteem, grief/loss and coping skills.

In addition to treating clients with eating disorders, the outpatient tracks are also for athletes, food addictions, OCD, compulsive exercise, and night eating syndrome. Clients with dual diagnosis for substance abuse along with behavioral health concerns have specific treatment options available as well.

The multidisciplinary team of the outpatient facility in Pittsburgh includes a medical staff, Master’s-level therapists who are LPC and LCSW, and registered dietitians.

Extras

There are therapy and counseling options for family members and loved ones of the clients in treatment with The Emily Program.

In Summary

Every level of care at The Emily Program uses tried and true protocols, extended support and a safe environment. Participants learn new life and coping skills to carry on in the real world after treatment. The Pittsburgh treatment is no exception to this rule and continues to uphold this organization’s reputation for effective, compassionate programming.
