The Basics

The Emily Program is an acute eating treatment program with locations in four states. The organization serves both adolescents and adults who struggle with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and co-occurring disorders. The adolescent and young adult residential program in Chaska, Minnesota, is known as the Anna Westin House, named after the young woman who in the year 2000 succumbed to her own battles with an eating disorder. Programming includes 24/7 medical care, group and individual therapy, and holistic therapeutic approaches set within a caring home-like atmosphere.

Accommodations and Food

The residence offers 10 beds in a large brick building that was recently renovated. The campus combines medical and educational space along with offices and comfortable, contemporary residential quarters. All the bedrooms are semi private with large, multi stall and shower bathrooms. Bedrooms are fully furnished with full beds, dressers, night stands and desks. The entire building is decorated brightly and cheerfully with new appliances and state of the art equipment. Common areas include a living room area that has TV, computers, tables, couches and armchairs.

There is also a large kitchen and dining room where the meals are prepared and served. There is a staff chef and dietitian who creates healthy and tasty meals for the clients, and are able to accommodate specific dietary restrictions and needs.

Treatment and Staff

The adolescent track provides continued education as well so that clients don’t fall behind in their school work. Staff works with the different school districts and classes are run by teachers who are licensed through the St. Paul school system.

Therapeutic modalities are CBT, DBT, experimental and integrative interventions. While living in the residential facilities clients have regular outings within the community as a way to test out their coping and life skills. They go grocery shopping and eat at restaurants, in addition to movie nights and social gatherings. Through this they learn way to promote self care and awareness, and learn how to regulate their eating patterns and trust their bodies when it comes to food intake.
