The Crossroads Center OutpatientThe Basics

The Crossroads Center was founded in 1976 as a partner of the University of Cincinnati to provide treatment for alcoholics in Cincinnati and surrounding Hamilton County, Ohio. Crossroads separated from the University in the 1990s, but maintains several treatment partnerships with its medical school. Crossroads provides outpatient and residential treatment for those suffering from mental health and substance use disorders.

Its outpatient services are divided into two tracks, one that focuses on clients who have entered the criminal justice system (STOP) and one that focuses on clients with co-occurring disorders (SAMI). Outpatient clients from the general population can also be seen in the STOP program.

Treatment and Staff

After an assessment, clients are placed in either the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or the standard outpatient track. IOP clients attend group therapy three times each week and have individual therapy once a week. The IOP usually lasts six to eight weeks, after which clients can step down to the standard outpatient program. Clients in the standard outpatient program attend group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as needed.

The therapeutic foundation of treatment is CBT, and groups have fewer than 15 participants. The treatment team includes Master’s-level therapists including LPCs and LSWs and addiction counselors with CADC credentials. There are three psychiatrists on staff as well as a psychiatric nurse practitioner for medication management.

Attendance at 12-step meetings is suggested, but not required. If clients feel 12-step meetings aren’t a good fit, they are encouraged to seek out other peer support programs such as Rational Recovery.

Crossroads also offers Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addiction using Suboxone or methadone alongside group and individual therapy.

Extras

Family members can attend a client’s individual therapy if the treatment team thinks it would be beneficial. As clients near the end of their treatment plan, they create an aftercare plan with their counselor that usually includes a schedule of individual therapy for ongoing support.

Clients in the STOP program may be eligible to have their criminal record expunged upon successful completion of the program.

In Summary

The Crossroads Center’s outpatient programs specialize in treating clients with dual diagnosis and those whose substance abuse has led to encounters with the criminal justice system. Its large treatment team and one-on-one aftercare planning ensure that clients will connect with a clinician who can educate them and empower them to take charge of their recovery.
