The Center Review
The Center: A Place For Hope was founded in 1984 in Edmonds, Washington, a beautiful city just 10 miles north of Seattle. The organization was founded by Dr. Gregory Jantz, a best-selling author of over 28 books. The facility offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for adult men and women.
Accommodations and Food
The Center’s location feels very much like a college campus with a large number buildings all connected in a small community. All of The Center’s buildings are located within six to eight blocks of each other.
The Center can hold up to 40 clients at a time. During their stay, clients live in a collection of small houses on The Center’s campus. Each of these houses are designed to have six to eight clients and consist of three to four shared bedrooms with each client having one roommate. Each house also has a shared living room space and laundry facility.
The Center serves lunch in a cafeteria during the week and clients are responsible for their own breakfast and dinners. Clients prepare their own breakfasts that usually consists of cereal or oatmeal that is provided in each house’s fully-stocked kitchen. For dinner, clients either prepare their own meal from food in the kitchen or they eat at local restaurants or cafes. The Center encourages clients to eat homemade meals and have a well-balanced diet.
Although clients are not allowed to have a car in while in the program, The Center’s campus is located right on a bus line and near a train station as well. Clients also use local taxi services.
Clients are also encouraged to acquire a gym membership at a local athletic club while living at The Center.
Treatment and Staff
The intake process at The Center begins with a phone assessment with the potential client and a counselor. If the counselor believes the client would be a good fit for The Center, he or she is brought in for a formal in-person assessment. People who are not sober or stable during this assessment, are referred to an outside detox program. Residents are paired with a specific counselor who meets with them regularly throughout their stay at The Center to track their progress.
During this assessment process counselors at The Center create an individualized treatment program for each client based on their current needs.
The Center’s PHP lasts for 30 days and consists of six to eight hours a day of intensive therapy, Monday though Saturday. The treatment at The Center consists of a mixture of individual and group meetings. The specific schedule for each client is based on the counselor’s plan. However, the average day consists of two to three group meetings, an individual meeting with their designated counselor, a meeting with a psychiatrist and potentially a medical meeting based on their current health.
The groups are led by a counselor and have a maximum size of about 12 clients at a time. Since The Center aims to offer a specialized treatment plan for each client, The Center offers a variety of group topics including trauma, martial issues, anxiety and substance abuse education. The counselors also regularly use DBT in the group therapy, and occasionally CBT in the individual meetings. Counselors are also trained in the 12 steps and integrate these into the meetings when relevant.
The Center is a dual diagnosis facility and has a psychiatrist on staff that attempts to address the core of the co-occurring disorder during the client’s stay. Counselors are also especially vigilant around identifying potentially new undiagnosed disorders in the first 24 to 48 hour of a client’s admission, as they are still shaping the clients treatment plan during this time.
The Center’s staff is especially large and consists of 30 to 50 people at any given time. The staff includes an on-site nutritionist and diet technician that teach the clients life skills and how to develop healthy habits. The substance abuse counselors are all LADCs and come from countries all over the world including Japan and Brazil. The Center also has mental health therapists and clinicians on staff.
Extras
In regards to family programming, the Center offers family group meetings near the end of the client’s stay. When clients enter treatment, counselors believe they need to go through a period of adjustment without any outside contact. Once the clients have shifted their behaviors, counselors begin having group meetings with the client and their family members. These meetings cover substance abuse education and how to deal with triggers.
When clients are getting ready to discharge from the program, counselors ensure they have the proper support and plan before they leave. If counselors believe the client is in need of additional structured support, they will recommend them to outside outpatient programs and AA/NA groups in the community.
The Center also has a very active alumni network that the counselors introduce clients to when they leave the program. Clients are also encouraged to remain in touch with the counselors and call if they ever feel in trouble or need someone to talk with.

The Center’s focus on not only providing substance abuse treatment but also mental health treatment and life skills, allows clients to address every aspect of their life bringing a truly holistic approach to sobriety. The organization’s large staff, regular individual meetings and relatively small group sizes allow clients to truly receive a great deal of individualized attention. Finally, the strong alumni network provides clients with a solid support system when they leave The Center.
