The Cedars South Africa Review
The Cedars is an upscale residential treatment facility situated in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, a beautiful destination locale with some of the world’s best surfing and safari tours. Founded in 2003 by Keith Wilkes and Julia Coleman, The Cedars provides specialized care for clients struggling with alcohol and substance use disorders as well as individuals with surface addictions such as sex, gambling, pornogarphy or the internet. The Cedars offers individualized programming through a multi-disciplinary approach that employs nutrition, individual and group therapy, recreational activities and 12-step recovery.
Accommodations and Food
The Cedars is situated near the southeast coast of South Africa in a beautiful two-story home complete with spacious rooms, scenic views, comfortable furnishings and a large campus. The facility provides a laundry service, and clients are permitted a weekly grocery run.
Residents enjoy delicious meals prepared by the in-house caterer. Vegetarians and individuals with dietary preferences or restrictions are accommodated.
Treatment and Staff
The Cedars provides a three-month residential program that, for many clients, begins with a medical detox. The detox includes an around-the-clock nursing team, a physician and the medication needed to curb painful withdrawal symptoms. Following completion of detox, residents are then assessed by a team to help determine the most effective plan to meet their unique needs. Cedars provides a customized program. As such, there is no minimum time frame for care. Clients typically stay 90 days, though that varies depending on their needs.
While 12-step is the cornerstone of the programming, clients also engage in regular individual and group counseling sessions. In addition, residents exercise daily, work weekly with a personal trainer and learn about proper nutrition.
The Cedars is staffed by a medical doctor, CADCs, spiritual lecturers, addiction counselors, social workers, a clinical supervisor, a nursing team and a personal trainer. While the treatment team here believes that many clients with co-occurring disorders are in fact over-diagnosed, individuals are referred to a psychiatrist or psychologist if symptoms persist.
