The Carpenter’s Arms Review

The Carpenter’s Arms is a UK based, men’s only, faith-based treatment program that provides long term residential care for addicts. This program is designed for males between the ages of 18 and 65 who have experienced hardships  such as homelessness, illness, or financial ruin, due to their substance abuse. The Carpenter’s Arms program is broken down into a series of phases. They incorporate the 12 steps, Bible study and a structured schedule that requires accountability in order to progress to each level of treatment. In addition to operating this charity based rehab, The Carpenter’s Arms also runs a boutique hotel and farm shop that employs the clients.

Accommodations and Food

There are three locations that house the clients throughout their treatment program. The first is known as the Loughborough Centre, which offers 12 beds and has a community feel. Phase two takes place in a refurbished hotel with a total of 29 beds and en suite bathrooms. The final phase offers four, five bed houses throughout the Leicester area.

These locations are spacious and comfortable, and close to town centers and public transportation. In all of these locations, there are TVs and house computers that are available for use as long as the rules of the facility are followed. The meals are included during treatment as well.

Treatment and Staff

The initial phase at The Carpenter’s Arms entails clients being abstinent from drugs, alcohol and nicotine in order to be completely free from withdrawals and physically able to participate in the next level of treatment. This first step can last anywhere between two and 12 weeks. It includes group therapy, individual counseling and life skills coaching.

Phase two runs for about 26 weeks. At this point clients are fully substance free. They start to focus on relapse prevention, repairing broken relationships, anger management and coping skills. Residents in this also can also expect to participate in a number of group therapeutic and recreational activities.

The final phrase in treatment can last up to 18 months. It entails clients moving to one of four five-bed houses and putting their newly acquired life skills to work. They are encouraged to seek out employment or continued education, and to set realistic goals and solid plans of action. This is all while having the opportunity for constant support and contact with staff.

During the first two weeks clients aren’t able to use the phone or communicate with family members. There are mandatory events and weekly attendance of church services. In addition, residents must adhere to a curfew, submit to weekly drug screenings, keep their personal spaces and common areas tidy. Communication with any former clients is prohibited.

The Carpenter’s Arms was originally started by Richard and Judith Spence in 2008. They oversee a small staff of house managers along with a pastoral manager. Most of the staff members have successfully completed this program themselves.

Extras

There are several recreational outings and activities available. This includes inter-rehab soccer tournaments, scuba diving, sailboat excursions, camping and a vacation to Romania.

In Summary

The Carpenter’s Arms is Christian program that offers help to men who have struggled with their addictions to the point of losing loved ones, their homes, or a great deal of money. This program heavily relies on the community to encourage and support the clients while they are given a safe place to live, food to eat and jobs to perform. This is a caring rehab that truly fosters a new way of life.
