The Buttery Review

The Buttery is a Northern Australian treatment facility located in Binna Burra. It specializes in chemical dependency and other addictions, like gambling. The Buttery also offers dual diagnosis support. Among about five programs that operate under its umbrella, The Buttery has a two prong residential track that runs as a therapeutic community. Programming includes evidence-based therapies, 12-step and SMART Recovery. Clients can also expect to garner valuable life skills.

Accommodations and Food

The therapeutic community on the Binna Burra campus can accommodate around 30 clients in the residential track. Most share cozy, fully furnished bedrooms. The rooms are clean and nice, with all the basics, like a bed, dresser and some closet space.

The campus has several outdoor and indoor recreational and therapeutic activity spaces. There is an art therapy room, a garden and a volleyball court. Clients have chores and are responsible for keeping the facility running and clean. They trade off cooking and serving each other daily meals, as well as taking care of the laundry and other maintenance issues on campus.

Treatment and Staff

The community model The Buttery utilizes promotes group accountability and support. Clients experience day to day living while acclimating to sobriety.

The first stage of the residential program is about three months long. It involves clients accepting a life of abstinence. During this phase, there are daily support groups and individual sessions. Clients explore their history to uncover the root of the addiction and undergo a basic skills survival course. Throughout every step of treatment, clients attend off-site AA, NA or SMART Recovery meetings.

The next phase can last another three to four months. Participants continue on the path of recovery and treatment plan goals. This step can only be achieved after an assessment from the other community members to determine whether or not the client seems to be serious about their sobriety. If so, clients begin to work on an aftercare plan with their assigned case worker. They may decide to move into a transitional housing program for the last few weeks of treatment.

This program uses trauma-informed care models along with CBT approaches and medication management. For clients who have entered into treatment and need a maintenance track, there are medications for eventual abstinence from opioids.

There several staff members on campus. This include case managers, counselors, medical staff and volunteers.

Extras

The Buttery has a family counseling program. It includes therapy in both private and group settings.

In Summary

The idea behind the therapeutic recovery community model is that clients learn from each other, and pick up healthy habits while abstaining from drugs and alcohol. Everybody works together and through the support of the staff and other clients, begin to address their pasts. Donations and federal assistance maintain The Buttery, making it incredibly affordable to receive quality care.
