Southwest Australia’s The Buttery has several programs geared towards substance abuse, co-occurring disorders and other harmful behaviors, like gambling and eating disorders. The Maintenance to Abstinence Program (MTA) is for individuals who want to withdraw from opiates safely over time to eventually live an abstinent life. This program is considered a short term residential track, usually completed prior to pursuing long term residential treatment on the Binna Burra campus. Programming at The Buttery utilizes evidence-based protocols in conjunction with 12-step philosophy.
Accommodations and Food
Clients in the MTA program live on the same campus as the longer term program in a refurbished house. They have private bedrooms (for the most part) that are simply furnished with a bed, nightstand and wardrobe.
Additionally, residents share the kitchen, dining room, living room and bathrooms. The house is separated from the main facility, though still within walking distance. It’s surrounded by lush, tropical greenery. All the food is prepared and served on site.
Treatment and Staff
In order to be eligible for The Buttery’s MTA program, clients have to make sure they qualify. Some of the requirements entail a history of opiate use and abuse, and being on some sort of maintenance program already. Before actually beginning treatment clients who have been on a methadone program have to transfer to a Suboxone regimen. In order to complete this transfer, they have to stop taking their methadone doses for 36 to 72 hours.
During this process of transitioning to different medications and stabilizing with a new maintenance program, clients receive counseling, coping skills support and life skills training. Due to the nature of The Buttery’s MTA program, those with severe mental illnesses are not permitted.
Staff of the The Buttery’s MTA program include case workers and nursing staff.
The Maintenance to Abstinence Program at The Buttery is basically a stabilization phase before heading into longer term and more intensive treatment. There are a number of factors that affect the eligibility for this program, and those who get in have to be serious about their recovery goals. However, it does make the transition to total abstinence a bit smoother.
