Located in Columbia, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore, The Body Image Therapy Center is an outpatient treatment facility that provides specialized care for male and female adolescents struggling with eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and excessive exercise disorder as well as those with co-occurring mental health conditions. The facility offers a comprehensive IOP tailored to the specific needs of the individual client. With a multifaceted approach to care, Body Image Therapy integrates a number of therapeutic methods including evidence-based therapies, nutrition therapy and holistic methods. Founder and psychotherapist Andrew Walen assembled a staff of clinicians and therapists who are personally in recovery, ensuring a compassionate and understanding atmosphere. The facility does not offer the 12-step recovery model but clients in need of dual diagnosis support can receive medication management.
Treatment and Staff
Through an innovative, integrative treatment strategy, Body Image Therapy offers individualized care for clients with an array of eating disorders including anorexia, bulimia, compulsive eating, night eating syndrome, purging and restrictive food intake disorder. Body Image Therapy understands that treating adolescents is a different than treating adults. As such, the facility seeks to provide the kind of comprehensive care that heals “the whole person,” rather than merely treating symptoms. It is the goal of Body Image Therapy to help adolescents build self-esteem and learn the tools they need to overcome negative thinking and behavior patterns.
The facility offers an individualized IOP that is customized to the unique needs of the client and their family. Before beginning treatment, clients undergo a psychological and medical assessment to determine the most effective plan. The IOP takes place between 4 and 7 pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The evening schedule is ideal as clients receive treatment without disrupting school and parents can participate on family therapy nights. The duration of treatment varies depending on the status and progress of the individual.
In the IOP, clients engage in weekly individual and family therapy sessions as well as one-on-one nutrition counseling. Individuals also participate in regular group therapy and meal supervision. With a focus on building self-worth and coping skills, team therapists utilize a variety of therapeutic methods including evidence-based DBT, CBT and EMDR to treat trauma as a causal component of the client’s eating disorder.
Of course, nutrition therapy is a significant aspect of the IOP. Clients work with nutritionists to set goals, plan meals and design a sustainable long-term diet.
As previously mentioned, every team member has gone through the recovery process, and as such can offer empathy and perspective. The multidisciplinary team is comprised of social workers, counselors, therapists, a psychiatric nurse and several registered nurses. For clients with co-occurring disorders, the facility works with psychiatrists to provide medication management.
The facility also offers holistic models like art therapy, hypnotherapy, mindfulness training and psychodrama.
On Mondays, Body Image Therapy offers multi-family therapy sessions. Families are taught about the disease of eating disorders and how best they can help their son or daughter.
