The Bluffs Review
The Bluffs is an expansive new residential treatment program located on the grounds of a former resort in the rolling hills of eastern Ohio. The Bluffs is the newest addition to the Addiction Campuses family of treatment facilities, which includes inpatient and outpatient programs in Mississippi, Tennessee, Massachusetts and Texas.
The Bluffs occupies 80 scenic acres with multiple opportunities for connecting with nature and enjoying recreation, such as taking challenging hikes and canoeing in the resort’s lake. The program, which also includes detox, began operations last month; however, its clinical staff has decades of experience in the recovery industry.
Accommodations and Food
All treatment activities, leisure activities and accommodations are gender-specific. Men and women reside in different wings of the 100,000-plus square-foot lodge that serves as the facility’s main residence and treatment center. Residents have roommates, though single rooms are available for an additional fee.
A full kitchen staff prepares meals that accommodate residents’ nutritional needs and preferences. Catered snacks and beverages are also available throughout the day. Depending on their treatment progress, clients may be able to access their cell phones in the evenings after groups and meetings for the day have concluded.
Most clients spend their leisure time taking advantage of the games and activities available on the resort campus, such as shuffleboard, volleyball, hiking, boating and enjoying the lodge’s indoor and outdoor pools. The lodge also has a fitness center, ping-pong tables and is in the process of creating mountain bike trails.
Treatment and Staff
Detox lasts three to 10 days, and treatment plans usually span 28 to 34 days in total. The Bluffs has 162 treatment beds, though its population is usually lower in order to give each client individual attention. Clients rise by 7 am and, after taking medications and having breakfast, start the day with a community meeting at 8:30 am.
After, clients have group therapy, individual therapy and experiential therapy, such as yoga and art and music therapy, until 5 pm. In the evenings, they complete recovery homework and are encouraged to attend on-site 12-step meetings. The Bluffs hopes to soon add Celebrate Recovery and SMART Recovery to its on-site peer support offerings.
The treatment team at The Bluffs includes MSWs, LPCs, psychiatrists and LCDCs, all of whom have extensive experience providing dual diagnosis support. The treatment team uses Motivational Interviewing, CBT, DBT, the Living in Balance curriculum and the Balanced Life curriculum, a program Addiction Campuses has developed at its affiliated programs. Residents also participate in a didactic component to treatment, which includes classes on the effects of addiction and life skills training.
Extras
Families are encouraged to take part in family therapy and may do so via videoconference if they don’t live nearby. For aftercare, the clinical staff works with each client to create a customized discharge plan that may include on-going therapy and a schedule of peer support meetings. Addiction Campuses also offers a low-cost aftercare support program that includes online recovery meetings and coaching sessions for 15 months.

The Bluffs is a much-needed addition to the recovery options in eastern Ohio, a region hit especially hard by the opioid epidemic. Its clinical team is experienced in treating co-occurring disorders and family systems, ensuring that clients have an opportunity to address the mental health challenges and family dysfunction that may lie at the root of their addiction. The Bluff’s scenic campus offers residents a tranquil and pleasant atmosphere in which to focus on improving their health and setting new goals for their lives in recovery.
