The Ark Bali Review
The Ark Bali is a substance abuse treatment facility in the luxury resort district of Denpasar, Indonesia. Situated on the southern tip of Bali, Denpasar is the capital, a major tourist destination and the main gateway to the island. The Ark Bali provides an array of holistic treatment options to clients who are 18 years and older. A comprehensive inpatient program is available that includes 90 days of aftercare. The program focuses on a 12-step based recovery protocol and also offers dual diagnosis support for clients with co-occurring disorders.
Accommodations and Food
The Ark Bali is a converted boutique hotel that can accommodate up to 12 clients at a time. Each resident is housed in a private room with a queen or king bed, big screen TVs and en suite bathroom. The facility also includes meeting rooms, a media lounge, a dining room and a beautiful communal outdoor space with smoking areas, a pool and a gym.
All meals are prepared on site and included in the price of stay. Plenty of dietary options are available for each meal including traditional Indonesian food and more western choices.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at The Ark Bali is completely individualized and the duration of the program can last one to three months. If clients feel they need more time, arrangements can be made to extend their stay. Detox is not offered on site, so it is recommended that new clients complete this phase before beginning treatment. Referrals to a local hospital that has a cooperative relationship with The Ark are available.
Upon admission, clients spend every day attending individual therapy with an assigned counselor and taking part in group therapy twice a day. Weekly schedules include time for guided meditation, completing written assignments, off-site excursions and time to swim or work out. Treatment uses CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), the 12-step framework and experiential modalities such as art therapy and yoga. Clients are also required to attend at least three off-site AA/NA meetings each week, with transportation provided. Support for co-occurring disorders is available in the form of specialized groups and medication management.
As clients progress through treatment, there is a shift toward a focus on relapse prevention, finding a safe sober place to live post treatment and assessing vocational skills. Counselors work with clients to help plan structured activities, learn new skills and gain confidence before leaving treatment.
Treatment is available in English, as many of the staff are from Australia or the UK. The Ark Bali employs a licensed counselors, psychiatrists and psychologists, mindfulness coaches and a nutritionist.
Extras
The Ark Bali aftercare offers 90 days of ongoing therapy with a staff member in person or via video chat. The Ark also works with treatment partners around the world to provide referrals and make sure recovery will continue at home.
