The Basics

The Arbor Behavioral Healthcare provides a full continuum of substance abuse treatment, including residential, outpatient, transitional care and sober living, in and around Austin, Texas. Established in 2010, The Arbor maintains two sober living facilities for men and one sober living facility for women.

The Arbor was founded by Justin Harvey, a former Marine, and Jim Walker, who has 30 years experience as a recovery counselor. Walker is also a graduate of the Johnson Institute of Intervention. The Arbor’s Medical Director is Dr. Russell H. Carter, a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Arbor’s two mens’ homes house 10 residents each, and its women’s home houses 11 residents. Clients have roommates in the well-appointed residences, which feature modern décor and high ceilings. The homes have common areas with flat-screen TVs and gourmet kitchens where residents prepare their meals.

Rules and Regulations

Clients must have at least 30 days of sobriety before entering the homes. Upon enrollment, many clients also enroll in The Arbor’s outpatient treatment programs. Residents are expected to work at least 30 hours a week and/or be enrolled in school. Clients adhere to a 10 pm curfew on weekdays and 12 am on weekends, and must complete daily and weekly chore assignments.

Residents are required to attend at least five 12-step meetings each week, have a home group, obtain a sponsor and fulfill a service commitment. A unique feature of Arbor’s sober living is that its house managers meet with its clinical staff every other week to discuss each client’s progress. House managers also meet with clients one-on-one each week, to help support their recovery goals.

If clients need additional support, they can arrange sessions with one of The Arbor’s many therapists or recovery coaches.


Family members can visit the residences during designated hours. Clients can also earn passes to visit family off-site as they successfully complete fulfill their obligations and pass weekly drug tests.
