Located just outside of Kansas City, Missouri, Thalia House is a transitional living facility for women in early recovery from eating disorders and co-occurring conditions like substance use disorders and trauma. Founded in 2011, Thalia House provides around-the-clock support, life skills training and relapse prevention as well as an individualized Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) through a collaborative partnership with the Resonate Clinic and the Robin Foundation. Clients typically transfer into Thalia House upon completion of an inpatient program, and are immediately provided with support, community and encouragement to take responsibility for their own life. Accommodations and Amenities
Situated a few miles from Kansas City in the small city of Fairway, Kansas, Thalia House is a beautiful country home that can house up to seven clients in three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Bedrooms are well lit, decorated with bright colors and fitted with two full-sized beds. Residents enjoy fresh linens, nice furnishings, a sunroom, comfortable living room and a Jacuzzi on the patio.
Rules and Regulations
While the duration of stay at Thalia House varies depending on the specific needs, goals and progress of the individual, clients are required to stay at least 30 days. Most individuals stay at least three months. During their stay, residents are encouraged to set short and long-term goals and stay involved through part-time employment, going to school or volunteering.
Thalia House offers day and evening IOP ideal for clients seeking a therapeutic structure while attending school or working. The day IOP takes places from 10 am to 1 pm in the house. The evening IOP takes place at Thalia’s sister facility, Resonate Clinic. Clients can be shuttled to the clinic if they opt for evening IOP. Before beginning treatment, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment to help the Thalia House team determine the best individualized treatment plan tailored to the individual’s specific needs. Programming utilizes a multifaceted approach that integrates a number of methods including holistic treatment, evidence-based therapeutic practices and skill building.
Residents engage in weekly individual and daily group therapy with a focus on a number of issues like body image, relapse prevention and holistic practices such as mindfulness, healthy life, gratitude, expressive arts, journaling and yoga. Nutrition therapy is an integral component in the treatment. Clients meet weekly with a registered dietitian and learn how to build and maintain a sustainable, healthy diet. The facility also utilizes evidence-based practices like DBT and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as well newer, innovative methods like neurofeedback. In addition, clients with a co-occurring substance use disorder receive a personalized treatment plan rooted in the 12-step recovery model.
Thalia House is comprised of therapists, nutritionists, counselors, dietitians and a house mom that lives on-site for around-the-clock care and supervision. For those in need of dual diagnosis support, Thalia House also works with outside physicians for medication management.
In addition to transitional living and a comprehensive IOP, Thalia House also provides monthly classes for the families of clients.
While the home is occupied by female clients only, the evening IOP at Resonate is open for adolescents and adults for males and females. Clients engage in a 12-week program that includes nutrition therapy, relapse prevention, regular skills groups and evidence-based practices.
