The Basics
Created in 1985, Terra Nova Counseling offers psychotherapy and education to Sacramento area residents seeking help for mental health issues. With locations in Sacramento and Citrus Heights, California, this organization employs approximately 40 therapists and 10 CADCs. All treatment is offered on an outpatient basis through individual therapy, with evidence-based therapy designed to help clients learn to live sober lives.
Treatment and Staff
TNV offers outpatient services for both substance abuse and mental health issues. Before clients can officially enroll in a program, all participants are required to take an initial intake assessment. Clients requiring either detox or residential treatment are referred elsewhere.
Though TNV treatment is limited to a basic outpatient program, the facility’s emphasis on individual therapy ensures that clients receive plenty of individual attention. Working closely with a therapist, clients can address their unique underlying issues for addiction. Typically sessions last for an hour with clients attending weekly, though each individual and their therapists determine an appropriate treatment schedule and duration. Evidence-based therapies like CBT are used to help clients identify and correct negative thinking patterns. TNV also focuses on relapse prevention techniques to help clients recognize triggers and prepare for sober life outside of treatment. While the 12 steps are not a mandatory component of the program, clients are free to participate in AA/NA as a supplement to treatment.
Aside from individual therapy, clients can also schedule family or couples therapy whenever necessary. These sessions teach clients and their loved ones healthy communication, how to set healthy boundaries and about the recovery process. The staff at TNV consists of Master’s-level therapists, interns and CADCs.
Extras
Additional services at TNV include psychiatry for children and adolescents, trauma therapy, juvenile sex offender treatment and a three- to 18-month DUI education program.

Terra Nova Counseling treatment is focused on each individual’s needs making it a solid option for substance abuse and mental health needs. A large staff of credentialed professionals utilize evidence based therapies in one-on-one sessions, though clients also have the option to include their families as they progress through treatment. While those seeking peer-support or group therapy may not find this program ideal, Terra Nova is flexible and low intensity option with a sliding scale payment option making help accessible for all.
