The Basics
Ten16 Recovery Network began in Midland, Michigan in 1979 as a halfway house for addicted men and women. Over the years it added a residential treatment facility—also in Midland—and a detox facility in Mt. Pleasant. It received its CARF accreditation in 1994. Ten16 now offers outpatient services in Midland, Mt. Pleasant, Big Rapids, Gladwin and Clare, all in central Michigan.
Ten16’s mission is “to help guide those impacted by drugs and alcohol to change the story of their life…(and) offer an opportunity to follow a clear, personal path of hope, change and recovery.”
Treatment and Staff
Ten16’s Midland and Big Rapids locations have its most robust outpatient offerings, though services are available at all locations. Treatment is offered at the standard outpatient level, with most clients attending group therapy once a week and individual therapy as-needed. However, most clients also take advantage of Ten16’s case management services and weekly recovery coaching and peer support events, making it possible—and not unusual—for clients to participate in recovery activities four to five days a week. The duration of participation in the outpatient program is progress-based, and clients often attend for over a year.
The treatment team at Ten16 consists of LADCs, CADCs and LPCs. While they’re able to address co-occurring disorders in therapy, clients needing dual diagnosis support are usually referred to the county’s mental health clinic. Therapy groups use the 12-step framework and while clients are not required to attend 12-step meetings they are encouraged to do so. Some branches host on-site weekly AA meetings.
Extras
At the Midland and Big Rapids locations, recovery coaches host Friday night peer support events that include pizza and discussion of working the 12 steps. Each location also hosts social events designed to bring addicts’ families into their recovery, such as family horseback riding. Families can also attend a client’s individual therapy sessions if the client and treatment team thinks it would be beneficial.
Ten16 offers Pivot Point Academy, a six-week program that teaches those in recovery how to improve their job skills and showcase their employability.
In Summary
For over 35 years, the Ten16 Recovery Network has been providing the residents of central Michigan with several levels of substance abuse treatment including detox, residential and halfway house programs. Its five outpatient programs heavily emphasize the importance of peer support in overcoming addiction, ensuring that clients leave treatment knowing how to build a stimulating and safe social network in which to flourish in recovery.
