The Basics

Tehama County Health Services’ Drug and Alcohol Division offers outpatient substance abuse treatment in the Northern California cities of Red Bluff and Corning. Their goal is to provide affordable treatment to those who need it, including education, early intervention and aftercare services., and address all aspects of addiction, including mental health issues and dual diagnosis. The 12 steps play a large role at the Red Bluff facility but are not part of the program at Corning. In both locations, the program offers a safe and supportive environment for drug addicts and alcoholics to get the treatment they need.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to starting treatment at either facility, clients are encouraged to come into the office to simply talk to a drug and alcohol counselor. By taking this informal approach, the staff hopes to ease the concerns of those who may be wary of treatment. Detox is not offered.

The Red Bluff location offers treatment for adolescents, as well as a perinatal program for women, and a dual diagnosis group is held once a week. All treatment is delivered through group sessions that have a strong 12-step focus. The length and frequency of sessions varies according to each client’s needs.

At Corning, adults are offered group therapy in the form of life skills, addiction education and coping skills. Clients with co-occurring disorders may attend the  dual diagnosis-specific session at the Red Bluff location. Medication management is not offered at the facility—clients are referred to Tehama County psychiatric and mental health services.

Though Corning does not mandate 12-step treatment or use it in the groups, the facility does require clients to start building a support network so they are not isolated when they finish treatment. Attendance at two support groups per week is mandatory. These groups can be anything from church attendance to 12-step groups to other recovery meetings such as SMART Recovery or even meditation groups.

Staff members at Tehama are LADCs. Group size is typically very small, limited to approximately five to 10 individuals.

Extras

Transportation services are available to and from treatment as well as between facilities in the case of dual diagnosis clients.

Women in the perinatal program have access to child care during group sessions. Alumni can drop in on groups if they feel they are at risk of relapsing.
