The Basics

Teen Therapy Center (TTC) is a Woodland Hills, California clinic that focuses on helping teens, young adults and their families deal with the stressors of adolescence and other changes that take place, either emotionally or physically. Services includes group and individual therapy and workshops that are gender-specific, co-ed or LGBT youth oriented. Programming is geared towards mental health concerns that such as depression, anxiety, ADHD and other learning constraints.

Treatment and Staff

In some cases newer clients are referred to the TTC for a psychological assessment, which is performed on site by a trained therapist. These assessments mainly consist of writing, verbal and social elements. In other cases, clients may begin in individual or group therapy while parents participate in family session or classes, though there is no set way of doing things at TTC.

Individual therapy is handled according to the age of the client. Younger clients often times have play or art therapy during their sessions, while the teenager may prefer more of a talk therapy approach. Either way, treatment is individualized and focuses on whatever the client needs at the time. Any age may experience expressive methods like music, art or writing during their one on one counseling time.

There are currently three groups that meet weekly known as The Guys Group for high school age boys, Fit 2 Be Female, also for girls who are in high school, and Living OUT Loud, a group for gay, bi-sexual, transgender and those questioning their sexuality teens. A common thread throughout these groups is the emphasis on self esteem and communication. The boys group meets on Wednesday evenings for an hour and a half and is lead by a positive male role model who encourages them to open up about their feelings and discuss any issue they’re currently experiencing either in school or at home.

The girls group focuses on teenagers who have gone through a sexual trauma and offers a safe and constructive environment to talk about whatever is going on in their lives and foster empowerment and support. This group is lead by a Master’s-level LMFT who is also a personal trainer. The clients spend have the session exercising and the other half in therapy, which promotes both physical and mental health.

Finally Living OUT Loud is a Friday evening group that is an informative and supportive therapeutic environment. During sessions clients discuss civil rights, sexuality and health and coming out in a judgement free atmosphere.

The staff at TTC all have extensive knowledge and experience working with adolescents and teens and have the ability to communicate with them during what is for most a confusing and difficult time. They are LPCCs, LMFTs and child psychologists.

Extras

There are family therapy and parenting group options offered at TTC. Family therapy is a private meeting with family members and a therapist who discuss changes and other issues that are happening in the home. Parenting group is adults only and offers other parents a chance to hear that they are not alone on the parenting journey. While there is a great emphasis on teen-centered mental health issues, TTC still offers counseling for all ages.

In Summary

Teen Therapy Center offers a unique and refreshing break from the daily stress of life for teenagers and their families. Treatment works with all parties to improve communication and provide a safe place to sound off about what both parents and their kids are dealing with on a daily basis in a non-judgemental and safe place. For many families this clinic is a saving grace in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley.
