TCN Behavioral Health Services Review

Founded in 1990 as The Community Network, TCN Behavioral Health Services is a non-profit treatment network, providing rehab services to residents of Ohio’s Greene County and surrounding areas, from multiple locations. The mission of TCN Behavioral Health Services is to provide accessible and affordable treatment for the dual diagnoses of mental illness and substance abuse with clinical expertise.

Providing treatment rooted in the 12 steps and evidence-based practices, TCN Behavioral Health Services offers medical detox, Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and standard outpatient programs, in addition to a residential program for men called Christopher House.

Accommodations and Food

Christopher House is a single story, historic looking structure, with 16 beds in two large, dorm rooms. Each room houses eight adult men who sleep in bunk beds and use communal bathrooms. Community areas include an outdoor smoking patio and a TV lounge.

Food at Christopher House is prepared on-site. Meals are eaten family-style, around communal tables in the dining hall, and clients help to prepare, serve and clean up. Clients eat three meals a day together, things like baked chicken and mixed vegetables or pasta fragiole, and the kitchen works with residents to accommodate dietary restrictions.

Treatment and Staff

Outpatient detox is available at the Creekside clinic for those who are detoxing from opiates. Under the supervision of a staff that consists of an addictionologist and physicians, clients are administered Suboxone and participate in IOP.

Residential and outpatient clients at TCN receive a comprehensive assessment to determine their individualized treatment plan. Therapeutic methods include CBT and reality therapy. Treatment consists of a combination of group and individual therapy, based on the methods mentioned,in addition to addiction education and relapse prevention. Vocational training and GED classes are available to clients seeking to improve job prospects. Residential treatment typically lasts 60 days, and outpatient and IOP lengths depend on the client. A typical day in the treatment of a Christopher House client is a 7 am wakeup, followed by light housecleaning, breakfast, morning groups focusing on life skills and coping strategies, a lunch break, then individual sessions in the afternoon. In their evening 12-step work, clients are encouraged to work toward and complete Step 9—making amends—by the end of their residential treatment.

Casual time at Christopher House is limited but clients may utilize the smoking patio and community room with books and magazines, board games, cards and a TV. Clients are offered increasing house privileges as they progress and may leave the house with varying degrees of supervision.

Clients dealing with co-occurring disorders are monitored by a nurse and a doctor for medication management in addition to receiving psychoeducation. The building of coping skills is the focus of the dual diagnosis program.

IOP mirrors residential treatment with regards to scope, without the overnight supervision. Clients meet five times a week for three hours per session, for as long as their treatment team thinks is necessary. The standard outpatient program has two levels. Level I is for clients who haven’t experienced extreme consequences to their drinking or using. The focus is more on prevention and education to stop use before it escalates. Level II is designed for those who have had at least two or more serious consequences from drugs and alcohol. Standard outpatient participants meet twice a week for a total of six hours, with the same understanding, that treatment lasts as long as they need it.

Staff members include physicians, psychiatrists, drug and alcohol counselors and psychologists. The small facility boasts a three-to-one client-to-staff ratio.

Extras

TCN operates a number of walk-in centers that provide routine and emergency assessments. Aftercare is available for clients who have completed IOP, outpatient or residential programs and have at least 30 days of sobriety. The groups are geared toward relapse prevention, identifying triggers and teaching clients how to create and benefit from a support system. Clients needing recovery-safe housing after treatment may opt for the five-bed Freedom Hill transitional home.

In Summary

With multiple levels of treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, as well as dual diagnosis support, TCN Behavioral Health Services looks like a solid option for affordable recovery in the vicinity of Greene County, Ohio. Sixty days is double the length of most traditional residential programs, so Christopher House clients might have more of an opportunity to build a sober foundation. Being able to remain in outpatient treatment for an extended length of time could lead to the same thing; more solid roots in recovery.
