The Basics

The TLC Clean and Sober Living Homes network offers men and women in early recovery nurturing sober living environments. With over 40 properties in the San Francisco Bay area, TLC is California’s largest privately owned network of sober living homes. Established in 1988 by counselor Frank Montero, TLC homes provide peer support in an intimate structured living community. Since 1996, Montero has been working in the community as an advocate for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for addicts. TLC welcomes all addicts and alcoholics who have 24 hours of abstinence from drugs and alcohol, especially those on MAT.

Accommodations and Amenities

Each house is unique, but typically has space for six to 10 clients, who are housed in comfortable double or triple-occupancy bedrooms. Rooms include twin or full-sized beds, nightstands, lamps, closets and dressers. Clients are responsible for their own bedding, towels and groceries.

Food is prepared in spacious, fully equipped kitchens that are stocked with basic cooking supplies and utensils. Amenities include cable, HDTVs, laundry rooms with soap provided and complimentary Wi-Fi. House managers with long-term recovery live on the premises at each house to provide supervision.

Rules and Regulations

TLC requires a minimum 30-day commitment. All potential clients must be 18 or older and be medically stable. Residents must attend daily 12-step meetings, perform household chores, follow the direction of the house manager, pay their rent on time and attend two weekly house meetings—on Sundays and Thursdays. Clients are also encouraged to attend an Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), individual therapy or regular appointments with a sponsor. During that time, they must also begin school, secure a job or volunteer position. A 10 pm curfew is enforced for all who have less than 90 days of clean and sober time.

Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Residents who relapse must leave the premises immediately. After 24 hours clean and sober and a $250 re-admit fee, they can return to the home.

Extras

TLC is a member of both the California Association of Addiction Recovery Residences (CAARR) and the National Association of Recovery Residences (NARR) which require affiliates to maintain high quality homes.

In Summary

For those who seek to delve into a 12-step community in the Bay Area while sharing upscale houses, TLC is a great option. Residents enjoy comfortable houses with housemates who become like family. Clients in good standing can stay as long as they want, and some stay for years.
