The Basics
Tarzana Treatment Center‘s first treatment program opened as a 314-bed inpatient facility in its namesake of Tarzana, California. It now operates multiple programs across southern California, one of which is an outpatient program for adults and adolescents. This facility has an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and step-down treatments including aftercare. It utilizes 12-step based recovery along with individual and group therapy, relapse prevention and psychoeducation. These programs are open to clients who are dealing with a substance abuse issues or have an existing co-occurring disorder.
Treatment and Staff
The IOP is based on a phase system that lasts approximately a year, with the first three phases breaking down to eight weeks each, followed by six months of aftercare. At the initial intake meeting, the counselor designs an individualized treatment plan and places the client into a group therapy schedule. This is usually between three to five days a week with a minimum of two-and-a-half hour sessions daily. After the first phase, clients are able to step down to two days a week of group, and by the third phase they attend once a week while developing an aftercare plan. During each phase there are also weekly individual sessions with an assigned therapist.
The facility offers day and evening treatment hours and does its best to accommodate clients’ personal schedules in order to adhere to their treatment plan. The program strongly emphasizes the 12-step philosophy and requires clients to regularly attend AA/NA meetings in the community and show proof of attendance. Process groups offer guidance and cover relapse prevention, coping skills and parenting classes.
For clients with a dual diagnosis, there are specialty counseling groups available along with medication management. There are also Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) options for clients who need a maintenance plan for opioid addiction.
The multidisciplinary team of specialists includes MDs, RNs, psychologists, LCSWs, LCDCs, MFTs, dietitians and Certified Recreational Therapists.
Extras
There is a weekly family program that offers education, an introduction to 12-step and counseling. Additionally, there is a structured six-month aftercare program that includes weekly group sessions and monthly alumni events.
In Summary
The comprehensive treatment offered through Tarzana Treatment Center’s outpatient program is structured yet flexible. It provides clients with a safe, supportive environment to learn how to live sober gradually over an extended period of time, that’s significantly longer than similar programs. Tarzana’s network at large is an invaluable resource for dual diagnosis clients as well as individuals with a primary diagnosis of substance use disorder.
