Pinellas Park FloridaThe Basics

In 2002 Taking it to The Street Ministries began offering a faith-based, residential substance abuse treatment program for men. Street Ministries is based in Pinellas Park, Florida, and offers long-term accommodations and treatment that incorporates the 12-step framework.

Accommodations and Food

Street Ministries clients are housed in a quiet, residential setting. The home has a patio with outdoor seating, as well as a basketball court for recreation. A maximum of 12 men are accommodated at a time, and clients are grouped two to four per room, depending on occupancy.

The clients are responsible for purchasing food as well as cooking their own meals. There is a house grocery shopping trip once a week. Each client is responsible for keeping his personal space clean as well as doing other house chores which are assigned by staff.

Treatment and Staff

As a “Christ-centered” program, Street Ministries offers a treatment program that involves clients creating a meaningful relationship with Jesus. The average stay lasts six months, and clients are expected to do charitable work in the community in addition to maintaining job requirements or becoming gainfully employed.

A typical treatment day begins at 8 am, Monday through Friday, with residents checking in with the office manager and/or pastor. From 9 am to 3 pm, clients are either meant to be at work or actively searching for jobs, unless they have permission to remain home due to a disability or day off. Bible study runs Monday through Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30 pm and AA/NA meetings and classes are scheduled on Fridays from 6:40 to 7:40 pm. The curfew is set at 10:30 pm with lights out at 11 pm Sunday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday nights curfew is 11 pm, with lights out at midnight.

Saturdays are non-treatment days. However, every second Saturday of the month, clients must volunteer at a food pantry event for the ministry. On Sundays, clients must attend church at 10 am (they may go to various churches in the area so exact times may differ). Street Ministries also encourages clients to volunteer in the community and help out around the ministry campus during their down-time.

Street Ministries staff includes a pastor, office manager and a staff of Licensed Substance Abuse Counselors (LSACs).

Extras

A further focus of Street Ministries is on inviting family members to participate in sessions in order to repair relationships that were damaged by substance abuse. Job training, preparation and placement programs are also available.

In Summary

Nearing its 15th year of operation, Taking it to The Street Ministries supports the Pinellas Park, Florida community with substance abuse treatment and job support. With a Christian-spiritual foundation for recovery, Street Ministries treatment may not be the best fit for everyone, but a structured schedule and required attendance of 12-step meetings make for a promising start for lasting sobriety.
