South Lake Tahoe CaliforniaThe Basics

With a network of three facilities in Nevada and California, the Tahoe Youth and Family Services outpatient substance abuse treatment program has been running since 1971. Residents in South Lake Tahoe and Woodfords, California as well as in Gardnerville, Nevada can enroll in a flexible treatment program that aims to help clients develop the emotional and mental strength to conquer drug and alcohol addiction.

TYFS’s treatment approach does not incorporate the 12-step philosophy, but instead focuses on group and individual therapy for both adults and adolescents.

Treatment and Staff

Individualized treatment plans are developed prior to admission when clients meet with counselors for assessments. Groups are scheduled daily for young clients; adult groups are currently only offered at the Gardnerville location, with sessions scheduled on Tuesdays at 10 am and Thursdays at 4 pm.

Staff at each of the Tahoe Youth Family Services locations consists of licensed substance abuse counselors and therapists as well as mentors, social workers and at least one marriage and family therapist.

Extras

Clients may take part in family therapy, prevention therapy, solution-focused therapies and Trauma Informed Care (TIC).

In Summary

Treatment at Tahoe Youth and Family Services is limited to basic outpatient therapeutic services, and while the approach is not comprehensive, both adolescents and adults can access services at one of three facilities in California and Nevada. Those in search of an intensive treatment program that includes the 12-step framework or a holistic approach may find TYFS too limited in its scope, but for men, women and young people looking for a flexible and affordable program, this is likely a good place to start.
