As one of Washington State’s non 12-step substance abuse treatment options, the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department’s Treatment Services Unit 1 offers outpatient opioid substitution maintenance and monitoring services for adult clients. Tacoma Pierce County utilizes methadone for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) in conjunction with group therapy. No AA/NA meetings are offered on-site, nor are clients pushed towards the modality.

Treatment and Staff

Outpatient treatment at Tacoma Pierce County is mainly based on evidence-based group sessions. Further treatment modalities focus on abstinence and taking a holistic approach that treats mental and physical health as well as overall wellbeing.

As they work through their entirely individualized treatment plans, Tacoma Pierce County clients may also attend prevention classes, take part in group and individual therapy and attend optional family therapy. Tacoma Pierce County also implements random urinalysis to ensure clients’ ongoing sobriety.

Each client is expected to attend at least one group and one individual session per week while also working on what’s known as their their sobriety tool kit and skill development. While in treatment, clients are guided towards identifying resources that will be useful to their continuing sobriety. In cases where a client may be in need of more intensive services—such as inpatient or a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)—referrals are provided. Treatment sessions run on weekdays from 5:00 am to 2:30 pm.

Tacoma Pierce County staff includes a number of Licensed Substance Abuse Counselors (LSACs).
