The Basics
Founded in 1920, Syracuse Behavioral Healthcare is a multi-faceted behavioral health organization which provides treatment to families in Central New York. Today, the organization is the most comprehensive treatment provider for substance abuse disorders in the state. Treatment and Staff
Each program at Syracuse Behavioral Healthcare is individualized to fit each client’s needs, with therapy slots available in the morning, afternoon and evening on Mondays through Saturdays. Participants generally begin with an initial psychiatric assessment or psychological consultation to determine the best course of action. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) using Suboxone is also available for those coming off of harder drugs.
Once enrolled, programs include some combination of individual, group and family therapy. Groups meet anywhere from once to five times a week depending on the client, with different meeting times for different needs. Some group topics covered include relapse prevention, gender-specific subjects, co-occurring disorders, trauma counseling, parenting classes and anger management. All therapy is based in evidence-based treatment practices including CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Seeking Safety. Clients are required to attend 12-step meetings as part of their outpatient program as well. The staff at Syracuse Behavioral Healthcare is wide-ranging and includes CASACs, RNs, LPNs, LCSWs and Master’s-level counselors.

Aside from the structured programs listed above, Syracuse Behavioral Healthcare also offers drug screenings, medical exams and DWI/DOT evaluations. Nicotine replacement therapy and acupuncture services are also available. Those looking for aftercare can also choose to step down their intensity of treatment and continue in therapy. Those with children can also bring them to the facility for on-site childcare. These services are available to children under the age of six.
Other outpatient options include programs for gambling addicts, a mental illness track and standalone mental health counseling services. Aside from outpatient care, Syracuse Behavioral Healthcare also has a number of other services including detox, inpatient programs and sober living facilities. Two of the detox programs are located in nearby Rochester rather than Syracuse. Referrals are also available for those who need more intensive treatment services.
