Synergy Treatment Centers Residential Review
Established in 1989, Synergy Treatment Centers operates an intensive one-year residential treatment program in Memphis, Tennessee. Funded by the state, the program is free for state residents, and out-of-state residents may enroll for a fee.
Synergy requires applicants to apply for treatment with a letter outlining the history of their addiction and their desire to change. Alumni remark on the program’s rigor and effectiveness. Over the last three decades, the facility has evolved from beds in a church basement to a thriving non-profit with its own modern facility and annual budget that exceeds $2 million.
Accommodations and Food
Synergy can accommodate up to 84 clients in hotel-like quarters. Residents have roommates in modern suites that sleep four to a large room. The grounds feature courtyards with ample greenery for outdoor recreation and exercise. Meals are served in a cafeteria.
Clients have recreational activities such as movie screenings on Friday evenings and weekends. Behavioral Technicians are available 24/7 for supervision and support. Clients must keep their own spaces clean, but Synergy’s staff takes care of all laundry.
Treatment and Staff
The first five to six weeks of a resident’s stay are devoted to group and individual therapy and other treatment activities—including psychoeducation classes, medical care and peer support meetings. After this, clients move on to the Intensive Treatment Phase during which Synergy calls upon its network of supporters in local businesses to find the resident employment. In the Therapeutic Work Phase, clients continue to attend treatment activities and work for the remaining months of the program. Their wages are paid to Synergy for their treatment fees and room and board.
Staff utilize evidence-based methods including CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Trauma-Informed Care (TIC). The treatment team is also qualified to treat co-occurring disorders, as long as substance abuse is the client’s primary diagnosis.
Group topics include anger management, Big Book study and cognitive restructuring. Men’s and women’s gender-specific groups are also available. Throughout treatment, clients rotate through chore assignments in the mornings and attend 12-step meetings in the evenings. Meetings are held on-site three to five times each week.
The treatment team at Synergy includes LCSWs, LADCs, psychiatrists and nurses.
Extras
The facility also operates a 28-day residential treatment program for second and third offense DUI offenders. However, that program is only accessible through the state’s court ordered Alcohol and Drug Treatment (ADAT) program.
Synergy has extensive case management services. It works with clients to help them secure transitional housing and other services as they near the end of their treatment plan.
Counselors work with clients to create substantial aftercare programs, such as outpatient treatment and on-going therapy. Additionally, Synergy operates an Alumni Group where graduates can support each other and share stories and resources.
In Summary
Over the last 25 years, Synergy Treatment Centers has built a successful long-term residential treatment program for those highly motivated to change. By providing extensive therapy and medical services and then integrating clients into the community through work assignments, Synergy has created a structure for clients to build a lasting foundation of health, life skills and self-esteem.
