The Sylvia Brafman Mental Health Center of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is an outpatient treatment facility that offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adult clients dealing with a variety of mental health concerns. This facility was created by Sylvia Brafman’s son, Ben, and his wife as an homage to his mother who dedicated her life to helping others. Ben also operates the residential facility, Operation Hope. The mental health services are individualized to each client’s specific needs and include medication management and CBT-based therapy. Programming is dedicated to helping mend and women find balance in their personal lives and regain their confidence and independence.
Treatment and Staff
Whether clients are coming to this facility from an inpatient program or simply beginning their recovery journey here, there is an intake process that considers all aspects of the potential client’s life before making a treatment recommendation. These programs are geared towards dual diagnosis clients, along with those who have experienced trauma and developed PTSD, have mood disorders like bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety, or thought disorders like schizophrenia. Each of these treatment tracks involves a significant amount of one-on-one attention in addition to group therapy and skills training.
The PHP is full time, requiring at least six hours of treatment up to six times a week. The IOP is a step-down treatment that is generally around three hours a day, three to five days per week, which tapers off as the client moves through his or her treatment goals. There are options for those attending either the PHP or IOP to reside at the residential campus if they’d like to remain in a supportive living space, though oftentimes clients live at home.
Programming focuses on helping the clients manage their mental illness while balancing work and personal lives. There are medication options offered and an emphasis on improving communication, problem solving and coping skills. Treatment modalities include CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and holistic approaches like art and music therapies. Though Sylvia Brafman Mental Health Center does not facilitate 12-step meetings, clients are not discouraged from seeking out additional peer support group options within the community.
The multidisciplinary team of clinicians includes the co-founders who are LMHC and LCSW, along with RNs and Master’s-level therapists who specialize in dual diagnosis cases.
Family involvement is an integral part of treatment so programming includes family therapy and education. Additionally every client has a detailed, individualized aftercare plan that offers weekly follow ups with a case manager and alumni meetings and events. These are ongoing options.
The treatment programs at the Sylvia Brafman Mental Health Center are client-focused and offer a supportive environment that is free from judgement and operated by caring professionals. Programming is focused on each client individually and there are no limits to the amount of time that one may spend in treatment, as it’s based on personal experiences.
