Sycamore House Review

Located in the Bevo Mill neighborhood of St Louis, Missouri, Sycamore House is an all male sober living facility. Opened in January 2008,  Sycamore House is a modest home that supports up to nine men at a time while they seek employment, learn important life skills and rediscover themselves in a positive, substance-free environment.

Accommodations and Amenities

Sycamore House is divided into several small units, each with two to three bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom. Each member of the house has his own room that comes complete with a twin bed and desk. Though the accommodations are modest, residents are welcome to bring their own household items to make their living space feel as homey and comfortable as possible.

The main shared living spaces consist of a large living room with several plush couches and a TV, a kitchen with dishwasher, oven, stove, microwave and refrigerator, and a recreation room that doubles as an office space, equipped with computer and wireless Internet. There is also a conference room for private meetings. The backyard has plenty of lawn furniture as well as a grill for those who want to barbecue.

Clients are responsible for their own food and household items. Community items such as toilet paper or paper towels are a shared responsibility.

Rules and Regulations

Respect and responsibility are highly valued at Sycamore House. Residents must work together to develop a chore schedule so the house is always kept neat and tidy. A weekly business meeting is held in the recreation room to ensure that all house finances, house business and tenant concerns are taken care of. There is also a mandatory weekly AA meeting in the recreation room.

Clients are required to obtain employment and are responsible for their rent and a share of utilities.

The men at Sycamore House must be proactive in their recovery, attend regular off-site AA meetings and obtain sponsorship. There is a no-tolerance policy for drugs at Sycamore House and anyone who breaks the rules is dismissed immediately. There is no curfew.

Potential clients must first go through an interview before being accepted at Sycamore House that is intended to gauge their commitment level. Applicants are admitted on a majority vote of all the current residents. Though there is only a 30-day minimum stay at Sycamore House, most residents stay at least a year.

In Summary

Sycamore House is a no-frills home that isn’t very different from regular apartment living, though there are rules to ensure that residents are active in recovery. The emphasis is on each man finding strength within himself to ease the transition into permanent housing. This is a great option for men currently in recovery and seeking an affordable living situation, though they should be ready and responsible enough to fend mostly for themselves.
