Swift River is a wilderness treatment center located in Cummington, Massachusetts, an hour west of Amherst. With a strong adventure component, each phase of the program is designed to address different levels of need. The continuum of care includes detoxresidential treatment and aftercare for adults dealing with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health issues.

Accommodations and Food

Swift River is located on a 500-acre retreat in the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts. The property boasts a lake for fishing and kayaking. The facility is a comfortable atmosphere designed to feel like home for up to 18 residents. Clients live dorm-style and share gender-specific rooms with one other person. Residents have access to a high-quality exercise room, Tai Chi and yoga classes on site.

Nutritious meals are served three times a day and healthy snacks are also available. Each client receives a wellness assessment and based on that, dietary guidelines may be implemented. This may include restrictions on sugar and caffeine.

Treatment and Staff

Swift River residents typically stay a minimum of 30 days but it varies depending on the individual. For clients facing withdrawal symptoms, treatment begins with a physician-supervised detox program designed to smooth out this phase. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) using low-dose Suboxone, Naltrexone or Topiramate is available for those struggling to abstain from opiates or alcohol. Clients must attend at least one individual session a week. Group therapy takes place daily and utilizes CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Attending on-site AA/NA meetings is also required as a part of treatment.

Swift River recognizes the importance of dual diagnosis support for conditions like depression, anxiety and trauma as well as serious medical issues such as liver disease and HIV. All clients meet with physicians and a psychiatrist on a regular basis to discuss psychiatric conditions, medications and any other medical issues.

The Swift River staff includes Master’s and PhD-level therapists, who specialize in addictive disorders, CADCs, case managers and LCSWs.

Extras

Along with counseling and clinical care, Swift River offers a broad array of outdoor adventures. Wilderness components of the program include year-round outdoor activities like swimming camping, zip-lining, fishing, hiking and mountain climbing. Clients are encouraged to learn survival skills in the wild; like making a fire from scratch, cooking over a fire and constructing shelters. This is not a boot camp and clients are not required to participate if they aren’t comfortable.

The free, yearlong aftercare program includes weekly calls with a counselor and/or participation in alumni groups once a month. Graduates are also provided with referrals for outpatient programs and assisted in finding temporary housing.

In Summary

Swift River is a great resource for those who need help with substance abuse and behavioral health issues. It boasts an impressive list of adventure therapy options and encourages peer support. The aftercare component is also a great way to take advantage of ongoing accountability necessary for clients to move forward and make positive life choices.

  1. This place is a joke! SAVE YOUR MONEY! Matt Love the CEO couldn’t be anymore heartless! Once they have your $25k they couldn’t care less! Want to discuss your experience? Matt Love the CEO will hang up on you after saying he has nothing to say! Want to continue to use while in there? You are in business! The counselors have whatever you need! There are multiple ways to bypass the drug test. One girl even slept with a counselor! There are far more facilities in the US that are LEGIT! This place is the worst! Do a simple Google search to read about the patient who overdosed last year! THEY DON’T CARE! The BBB has multiple complaints! Read about it yourself in this article!

  2. I loved this place, the staff was amazing, Most are in recovery. They are kind and understanding. They will medically detox you. It cost about 32k, depending on insurance, if you refuse they will negotiate. They pick you up at home if necessary. Be careful with the meds they give you, I’ve seen people literally OD on the meds they gave them, probably cause the company makes more money off the insurance, the more they give you, the more they get to charge. ALWAYS check the meds they dispense to you, they have absolutely made many mistakes, on a daily basis, this is the medical side. The other side is wonderful, the treatment side. There is no swimming, kayaking or mountain climbing, and fishing depends on the staff they have available that day. The food is amazing!!!! There are other classes like yoga, writing, games, volleyball, basketball, painting, oil painting, art, music etc. There are no survival skills classes. After detox you get your home group and classes half the day, which is wonderful. The other half you do activities. When you get out you get added to the alumni page, and the moment anyone needs help, you post and you’ll immediately receive multiple calls and responses, so you’re never alone.

    • We are looking into this facility for our son who is an addict and tried to commit suicide. we have been down this road 8 times. he is an adult. Do you truely reccommend this place? It would bankrupt us. all previous treatments have been unsuccessful.
Thank you. a deperate and depressed mother

  3. JOE St Pierre on

The staff are great. I just left 5 weeks ago. After 6 days of detox. That’s all I needed. To detox away my kids. There is a ropes course, mountain biking , disk golf, work out gym. All the activities will begin when you leave the ATS side, and go to the CTS side. Your 1st 4 or 5 days are solely to detox. Most of the staff are in recovery, for 1 thing or another. So there not just book smart. They lived the life. And we’re successful with there recovery

  4. This review needs major editing as most of the information is incorrect.

There is no lake, no fishing, and no kayaking. There is a small pond and a river on the property, but there are no activities offered on the water.

At the moment there are 48 beds available, with plans to expand to over 100 by September. Rooms in detox as well as residential contain 4-5 beds each.

There are yoga classes offered, but no Tai Qi.

There are no wellness assessments recommending dietary restrictions to clients. There is a wide array of snacks and sugary foods and drinks available at all times.

The maximum length of stay depends on an individual’s insurance or private pay plan, but typically the stay is 28 days or fewer.

Attending onsite AA and NA meetings is not a requirement.

There is no swimming, fishing, camping, or mountain climbing. There is no mountain to climb. There is a Ropes Course, but there is no zip line.

There are no survival skills classes. This includes fire making, cooking, shelter building, etc.

The aftercare program is not free. Last I checked it cost $100 a month, but it could be more.

    • The Detox unit at Swift River was temporarily shut down by the state in the winter of 2017 due to the passing of a client. The unit has since been reopened.

      • Jane Doe,
It seems you are familiar with the facility. I am just looking into them to assess for a family member who needs help. If you have any experience with this place as a patient, would you mind sharing your opinion about the quality of care and facilities?

        Thanks,
        Jane 2
