Los Angeles CaliforniaThe Basics

Founded in August 2014, by Susan Painter who sports over 16 years of sobriety and is active in the AA fellowship, Susan’s House is a sober living house for women in . Painter, who is a registered nurse, lives on the premises and provides supervision for a safe and secure environment, as well as support for any clients who are going through detox.

Accommodations and Amenities

Susan’s House is a white stucco Mediterranean style home with a red tile, rounded doorways and a white picket fence. The house was built in 1927 and features a landscaped lawn and a lovely garden full of pink roses, colorful pansies, green foliage and a Buddha statue. In keeping with an intimate ambience, Susan’s House accommodates no more than four clients at a time. Residents are paired in wooden tiled rooms that feature vintage dressers, twin beds and closet space.

Residents are responsible for their own groceries and meals are prepared in a fully equipped kitchen with white appliances. The country-style dining room features a white distressed table, matching chairs with flowery trimming, a hanging collage, an old-fashioned upright piano and windows covered with white curtains. Amenities include Wi-Fi, Cable TV and laundry facilities.

Susan’s House allows the children of clients to spend overnights and families are welcome to visit. While the house is pet friendly and allows certain canine breeds on the premises, pit bulls are generally not allowed.

Rules and Regulations

At Susan’s House, there is the belief that one size does not fit all, and each client receives individualized attention and care. For clients undergoing detox, medical monitoring and supervision is provided around the clock. Residents requiring medical care must sign a release so that their doctors can provide staff with information on any prescribed medications. Painter provides medical, holistic and mental health referrals, to her clients when necessary.

Requirements of residency include attending outpatient treatment, being at the house meetings and participating in the on-site arts and crafts workshops as well as relapse prevention education classes. The arts and crafts workshop provides an opportunity for clients to find healing through creative self-expression. Materials are provided, and residents work in different media, including collage, painting and sculpture. Other weekly requirements include attending three 12-step meetings, and working with a sponsor.

At Susan’s House there is the belief that sometimes a client needs more than AA meetings. Other options including outpatient treatment and individual therapy are just as valuable, depending on the client’s individual needs and level of care. Local outpatient drug rehabs include Living Rebos, which is a five-minute walk from the house.

The curfew is midnight seven days a week. Susan’s House conducts regular drug and alcohol screenings and practices a zero tolerance policy, to ensure the safety of the entire household.

Painter has over 14 years of extensive experience as a licensed registered nurse working in addictive medicine in a Los Angeles hospital where she specialized in helping clients undergoing detox. She also has over 30 years of proficiency in acute medical and surgical hospital nursing, and holds a MAB (management of assaultive behavior) license in de-escalation techniques.

Clients are encouraged to participate in exercise.

Susan’s House is a member of the Sober Living Network, Los Angeles County Sober Living Coalition.
