The Basics
Based out of Ventnor City, New Jersey, Surfside Structured Sober Living is a recovery organization that provides sober living and intensive support for men in recovery from substance abuse. Residents are offered flexible lengths of stay, family-integrated care and individualized recovery plans.
Accommodations and Amenities
The facility has a total of 12 beds, two of which are reserved for men in the third phase of the program. Residents stay in shared bedrooms with twin beds, memory foam mattresses, dressers and closet space. The home has common areas with cable TV and several computers, a dining room and a full kitchen. Throughout their stay, clients are expected to prepare their own meals. The house is only three blocks away from the beach and a moment’s walk from the bay.
Rules and Regulations
To be eligible to live at Surfside, men must be between the ages of 18 and 30, have at least seven days sober and be willing to commit to a 90-day stay. Those who are in withdrawal, have a history of sexual offenses or severe co-occurring disorders cannot be accommodated. Residents must also turn in their cell phones for the first 30 days of the program.
All clients are required to submit to regular and random drug tests and attend 12-step meetings. Programs are generally broken into three phases. During phase one, clients are introduced to independent living through learning how to budget, finding a 12-step home group, finishing 20 hours of community service and completing the first three of the 12 steps. In phase two, clients gain basic job search skills; including creating a resume, writing a cover letter and gathering a list of references. Residents also work through steps four through six. In the final phase, residents begin looking for employment and finish their step work.
Extras
Additional services include surf lessons, yoga and cooking classes. The house is also has a variety of outdoor equipment that clients are free to use, like skateboards, surfboards and bikes. Depending on the season, the staff may also arrange off-site trips such as skiing or hiking. The facility can also help with interventions and case management as necessary.
