The Basics
Havilland House and The Cottages are sister transitional living facilities located in San Pedro, California. Run by Support for Harbor Area Women’s Lives (SHAWL House) which has been operational since 1990, these homes serve as a continuation to SHAWL’s initial six-month residential substance and domestic abuse treatment program for homeless women. Former SHAWL residents are given the opportunity to step down to either sober living facility for further recovery support, to bridge the gap between residential treatment and autonomy for up to two years.
Accommodations and Amenities
Haviland House accommodates up to 11 women, while The Cottages sleeps up to four women and four children in two separate, two-bedroom duplexes. Both houses have contemporary décor with comfortable furnishings and tidy communal living spaces. The Cottages has a back yard with a picnic table and play house for resident children.
Length of stay at either of the facilities typically lasts from 18 to 24 months. Residents are responsible for purchasing food and preparing their own meals. However, government assistance programs typically cover the cost for food.
Rules and Regulations
While living in either transitional home, clients follow an individualized schedule and continue with case management services as a carry-over from the residential program. Residents develop living and social skills while living in a drug and violence free environment with limited structure. The main requirement for residence is that women must continue to work on their sobriety and they must be either employed, attending school or both. Clients are also encouraged to attend AA/NA meetings hosted at the main SHAWL house location.
Clients work with CDACs, four volunteer assistants and a driver who helps them with all their transportation to and from meetings, appointments and work.
