The behavioral health network Sunspire Health is headquartered in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, and currently includes licensed residential treatment centers in California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Oregon, South Carolina and Texas. The Heartland location is in the small town of Gilman, Illinois, about an hour and a half south of Chicago. It provides a full continuum of care; including detox, residential treatment, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Heartland also offers dual diagnosis support for clients with co-occurring mental health disorders, as well as support for those with eating disorders, gambling, technology and sexual addictions.
Accommodations and Food
On 32 acres of beautiful lakefront property, the Heartland facility boasts a rural environment ideal for recovery. The 26-bed facility places clients in gender-specific double-occupancy rooms that each have its own bathroom.
Clients eat three gourmet meals a day together in the dining room. The healthy cuisine is prepared on-site by chefs and accommodations can be made for those who require special dietary restrictions.
Treatment and Staff
Residential care usually lasts between one and three months, with the exact length dependent on the client’s individualized treatment plan. All programs begins with an assessment, followed by detox for those who need it. Heartland is an abstinence-based program so Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is used exclusively on a short-term basis during. Clients typically remain in detox for up to a week, then transition to the residential program and a regular treatment schedule. Clients on medication are monitored and assessed by a psychiatrist.
All residents participate in group therapy and educational sessions. Groups are scheduled daily and individual therapy appointments commence twice a week. Group discussions focus on resolving trauma, anger management, coping skills and relapse prevention. Lectures educate clients about the physical impact of addiction and the cycle of addictive behavior. Counselors are trained in CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). The 12-step approach is not incorporated into daily treatment but clients who are getting ready to graduate are encouraged to attend meetings upon release.
Tom Delegatto serves as the Executive Director and leads the team at Sunspire Health Heartland. He is a CADC and has over 25 years of experience in the addiction treatment field. The rest of the team includes Board Certified psychiatrists, nurses, Master’s-level clinicians and support staff.

There is an on-site exercise room, massage therapy rooms, and yoga classes are included in the residential treatment experience.
