Located in Powell River, British Columbia, Canada, Sunshine Coast Health Centre is a private, licensed, accredited, and Certified B Corp organization providing detox, residential and outpatient treatment for men struggling with mental health issues, addictions, and/or occupational trauma. SCHC launched a separate women’s program in December 2019, known as the Georgia Strait Women’s Clinic.
Accommodations and Food
Sunshine Coast Health Centre is an expansive 9-acre property hosting buildings with a cedar shake exterior, complete with an 8-bed medical unit and 36 primary care beds. Residents can stay in both private or semi-private rooms, the latter shared with one other roommate. The facility features an expansive recreational room with several leather recliners and a widescreen television, foosball, and ping-pong tables, musical instruments and a served buffet. The property looks out onto the Malaspina Strait and Texada Island with private beach access.
There is an on-site fitness center with a lap pool, work-out equipment and an outdoor basketball hoop.
All clients get initial and mid-program diet consultations that help staff to design individual meal plans. Breakfast often consists of heartier fare like pancakes and sausage, while lunch and dinner include a range of options such as Thai chicken salad and salmon fettuccine. Snacks include muffins, juice and cookies as well as yogurt and raw veggies. A full sample menu is available on the website.
Treatment and Staff
Withdrawal Management (detox) is a 7-day program that includes travel assistance, medical supervision, nursing consultations, and psycho-educational groups. After stabilization, clients may choose to continue on to a more structured recovery program.
Clients can enroll in the primary programs for as long as they’d like with a minimum recommendation of 30 days. Treatment typically runs from 7 am to 9 pm each day and incorporates psychotherapy groups, rotating workshops, individual 1-on-1 sessions with primary counsellors and adjunct therapists, daily group fitness and recreation, and activity time. A wide number of evidence-based modalities are used and all care plans are individualized, though typically comprised of group and individual therapy, EMDR, Hypnotherapy, Somatic Counselling, DBT, and art therapy . Treatment at Sunshine Coast Health Centre is not based in 12-step principles, instead taking a Meaning-Centered psychological approach based on the research of Viktor Frankl and Paul T.P. Wong. Residents may still attend off-site NA or SMART Recovery meetings if they wish.
Staff consists of Master’s- and PhD-level psychotherapists, doctors, LPNs and RNs.
Once clients have completed one of the above programs, they can continue on to a Extended Care program that also serves as a transitional aftercare option. During this stage, clients can access all services at SCHC, but no longer have a primary counsellor. During this time, clients in Extended Care learn relapse prevention strategies and prepare to reintegrate into society. This phase is essentially sober living, as residents still live at the same facility.
Sunshine Coast Health Centre offers a comprehensive program for addiction recovery, with a full continuum of care and well-appointed facilities. Though 12-step does not play a major role, potential clients should still be impressed by the range of both evidence-based and holistic methods available as well as the work-life balance built into each plan. For those seeking high-end amenities at an affordable price, Sunshine Coast Health Centre is a solid choice.
