Sunset HouseSunset House Review

Sunset House is a non-profit men’s residential treatment program in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Located near Interstate 95 and the Palm Beach International Airport, Sunset House is in close proximity to an active community and ample employment. Founded in 1996 and licensed by the Department for Children and Families in 2000, it is the oldest licensed residential program in the area.

Accommodations and Food

Sunset House can accommodate 34 male clients in 10 apartments. Each two-bedroom unit houses four residents and includes a living room and kitchen. There is a TV and Wi-Fi in each apartment and no restrictions on TV viewing. Cell phones and personal electronics are permitted. Other amenities in the apartment complex include a library, computers with Internet access, gardens and a gym. Clients have access to a food pantry and are responsible for preparing their own meals.

Treatment and Staff

Sunset House is a Level IV treatment program that includes evidence-based practices and 12-step recovery. Clients attend both individual and group therapy. Those in need of detox or dual diagnosis support are referred to outside facilities. Length of treatment ranges from six to nine months and is split into three phases. Clients have to apply to move on to the next phase and must fulfill certain requirements like length of sobriety, employment, have or have become a 12-step sponsor. In addition to work and chores, clients attend meditation, a daily 12-step meeting and one individual and three groups sessions a week.

All clients are required to leave the residence by 10 am to go to work or seek employment; however, clients in the first phase of treatment are only allowed to leave for this reason. As they move on to the second and third phases, restrictions lift and residents are allowed to leave the for social activities. Visitation is permitted on a case-by-case basis and becomes less restrictive as a client remains in treatment. During Phase Two and Three, clients can apply for leave of absence request.

The mixed gender staff includes a medical director, a MCAP and LCSW clinical director, CRRA Program Director, a MCAP therapist, case manager and BHTs. Additional staff includes interns and administrative support staff and the staff-to-client ratio is one-to-six.

Extras

For aftercare, Sunset House offers a sober living house for clients who have completed treatment and have been sober for at least six months. Case managers regularly check in with graduates and there’s an active alumni group that meets weekly. Sunset House holds the Tommy Moore Golf Classic as its annual fundraiser.

In Summary

Sunset House is an affordable residential treatment program for men who wish to balance independent living and treatment in a structured environment. This is a great fit for clients who do not require detox or dual diagnosis support and want the 12 steps to be an integral part of treatment. With clear rules set in place and faith in its clients, Sunset House gives its the clients the opportunity to build confidence through self-governance.
