Sunrise House Review

Found in 1983 by a New Jersey businessman, the Sunrise House offers detox, inpatient, Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and outpatient treatment for adults and adolescents who suffer from alcohol and drug abuse. Located in Lafayete, New Jersey, the program offers evidence-based treatment, 12-step meetings and treatment for those with dual diagnosis.

Accommodations and Food

Sunrise House has 110 beds. Clients stay in double-occupancy rooms in single beds, sharing with a roommate of the same gender. Some rooms have private bathrooms and those who stay in rooms without private baths use gender-specific community bathrooms.

All food is cooked on site, and clients are served three meals a day. The meals are eclectic and the menu changes each day. During assessment, clients meet with a registered dietician who advises the kitchen of any specific dietary needs for each client. Food sensitivities and allergies are accommodated, as well as vegetarian and vegan diets.

Treatment and Staff

Detox at The Sunrise House is a medically supervised program that helps people comfortably withdraw from alcohol, opiates, benzodiazepines, painkillers, cocaine and other drugs through medication. Each client has an individualized treatment plan and medication program depending on their particular needs. The goal of treatment is to not only provide physical detox, but also to help clients get started in a longer treatment program.

Clients in both residential and outpatient programs start with an assessment of medical and health history, psychological and addiction history, as well as social and work environments. A team of medical professionals from varied backgrounds collaborates to design a unique treatment plan for each client. This treatment team consists of addiction, health and behavioral health clinicians.

Treatment includes group and individual therapy. Using a CBT approach, groups focus on trauma, relapse prevention, life story, motivational enhancement therapy. Specialized dual diagnosis groups are available for those with co-occurring disorders. Additionally, the treatment program involves the 12-steps, with clients attending on site meetings nearly every evening. The amount of individual and group therapies, as well as therapy types, depends on the individual treatment plan of each client. The residential program is structured, with early wake-up times and groups scheduled throughout the day until 10 pm.

The IOP and outpatient programs offer flexible schedules that allows clients to live at home and continue work or school if necessary. Morning or evening groups are available for adults, and adolescents participate in an after school program. IOP clients attend three-hour group sessions three to four times per week, and traditional outpatient clients attend groups two to three times per week. Both outpatient programs offer one session of individual counseling per week.

The inpatient unit is staffed 24/7 with registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, CSACs and physicians.

Extras

An aftercare group is available once a week for clients who have completed residential or outpatient treatment. Family programs are also offered, consisting of a one-day session with family counselors.

In Summary

For those interested in a 12-step-based treatment program that also offers medical and evidence-based practices, Sunrise House is a great option. With detox, residential, IOP, outpatient and aftercare, the program is a perfect fit for someone looking to slowly transition from intensive treatment to lower levels of care in the same facility.
