Sundance CenterSundance Center Review

For those who would prefer upscale residential treatment in line with the Malibu model, the Sundance Center, an acquisition of Elements Behavioral Health group, might be a cost effective option. Surrounded by the arid air, manicured cacti and perfectly paved roads of Scottsdale, Arizona, this Southwestern abode helps adults kick drugs and alcohol in a pleasant desert oasis.

Accommodations and Food

The program at SC admits a total of 14 clients who are divided into two residences—the main building (which holds 10 people) and the retreat (which holds four special people). The main building requires all residents share rooms so those wanting (and able to afford) private accommodations are housed at the retreat for an extra $6,000 a month—perhaps a small price to pay for privacy, a computer room and a gym just a few steps away from your bedroom. The retreat is designed to give working professionals the opportunity to deal with their addiction without having to fully forgo attending to their career or business; while they’re allowed to have cell phones and personal laptops, they have to check them out as needed.

The first class accommodations of the retreat are in a desert-chic, four-bedroom adobe home right next door to the main house. While all clients of SC are provided the same level of personalized care, for those willing to pay a little extra, there are some additional perks —like a five-star hotel-esque welcome basket with a plush robe draped over a personal bathroom’s Jacuzzi tub. Other than private bedrooms, an in-house gym, computer room and therapy room, retreaters and main house clients have access to all the same amenities; even the backyard putting green and basketball court are shared.

All of SC’s meals are designed by a certified dietician and prepared by a professional gourmet chef. Alums rave about the cuisine. There are also unlimited snacks that are available throughout the day as well as fruit and coffee.

Treatment and Staff

The program at SC is founded in the 12 steps but focuses more on alternative therapies and holistic treatment. While the traditional method of recovery is introduced and practiced at SC—and attendance at outside 12-step meetings is part of the curriculum—those seeking more will certainly have many supplementary treatment methods to explore while in residence. In fact, the program itself is guided by a naturopathic doctor who understands that long-term healing involves a balance of mind, body and spirit.

With an average stay of 30 to 90 days, clients—who range in age from 20s to 60s—are given four individual therapy sessions per week. Depending on the individual needs of the client, standard psychotherapy and CBT may be combined with additional methods like DBT for personality disorders or EMDR for trauma. Group therapy is also part of the daily schedule, along with journaling time and 12-step meetings.

The clinical staff at SC receives rave reviews from former clients, with special gratitude extended toward Dr. Ravi Chandiramani, the facility’s primary care giver.

Therapists, counselors and other staff often mingle, eat and even do recreational activities with the clientele. The philosophy is that this helps staff get to know the clients better and helps clients open up and feel more comfortable

SC offers also offers a weekly family program—which allows the residents’ loved ones to come and visit (outside accommodations are required) and participate in family support groups and therapy to further assure whole person healing.

Extras

Program accoutrements include yoga, meditation, acupuncture, massage, hydrotherapy, nutraceuticals (vitamin and mineral supplements), B vitamin injections, hormone analysis, Ayurvedic and Western botanicals medicine, equine therapy, art therapy and nutrition therapy—including food sensitivity testing.

In Summary

Sundance Center is a luxury-level rehab available for a very affordable price. It’s holistic curriculum combined with 12-step philosophy and lots of other extras make it a comprehensive option for addiction treatment. The warm desert setting is the icing on the cake.
