Herriman UtahSundance Canyon Academy Review

The Sundance Canyon Academy opened in in 2006 in Herriman, Utah, about 30 minutes south of Salt Lake City. It provides residential substance abuse services to adolescent boys between 13 and 17, with a focus on  therapy, education, proper nutrition, recreation, and life skills training.

Accommodations and Food

Sundance’s services are offered out of a large 16-bed contemporary home. Clients may room two to four per bedroom depending on their age and the house’s occupancy at the time. The house has its own pool, as well as sports and music facilities. Clients may enjoy the common areas and maintain access to the kitchen. All meals are included in cost of stay with snacks available in between classes, upon request.

Treatment and Staff

Sundance is a long-term program, with the average stay spanning six to nine months. Clients must attend a 90 minute individual therapy session weekly. Group therapy takes place daily for a total of eight to 10 hours weekly for each client. The guys may choose classes they would like to attend in addition to therapy. The choices include adolescent male development, trauma resolution and information processing skills as well as adoption and attachment classes. Each student is also provided psychiatric services, as needed.

Goal setting takes place in the morning each day while clients do chores in the afternoons and evenings. Family therapy may be facilitated via skype or phone, as well as in person. There is to be no phone contact with the outside world for a client’s first two weeks aside from family therapy. A minimum one phone call or letter to parents per week is allowed and encouraged for each client. Sundance requires one or more campus visits and attendance at one family weekend before graduation.

Sundance runs an on-site fully accredited school and academic credit can be transferred to other schools upon exiting Sundance. Clients may apply to colleges from the Sundance school, as well. Guidance counseling is also provided as is vocational instruction in culinary arts (knowledge of knife skills, cooking preparation, menu selection, getting a food handler’s permit and training for all line cook positions). Music theory and practice, outdoor recreation, service and sports team instruction all take place alongside individual time, communal meals, chores, and school work like a normal high school curriculum.

Sundance staffs its Academy with Master’s and PhD-level therapists who specialize in adolescent development and disorders and maintains a teacher to student ratio of 1 to 8.

Extras

Sundance offers an experiential therapy component to those who desire it. It includes activities that take advantage of Utah’s natural beauty like camping, hiking, rappelling, 4-wheeling, boating, wake-boarding, jet skiing, snow-boarding, skiing and river rafting.

In Summary

Rounding its first decade of operation, the Sundance Canyon Academy’s credentialed staff offers a top-notch treatment program to its adolescent clients. With equal parts therapy, continuing education and therapeutic recreation, this is an excellent choice for teenage boys who need support to get back on track.
