Suncoast Rehabilitation Center lies 35 miles north of Tampa in the planned community of Spring Hill, part of Florida’s Nature Coast. Opened by a non-profit group in 2009, Suncoast is a residential treatment facility offering Narconon methods of recovery for drug and alcohol rehabilitation without on-site medical staff. Narconon International is an organization that promotes L. Ron Hubbard’s theories of substance abuse treatment and addiction.

Accommodations and Food

The facility’s two white clapboard houses rest under large shade trees on three undeveloped acres in Spring Hill. Both houses are comfortable, attractive and segregated by gender. The tastefully painted and carpeted bedrooms feature new Tempurpedic mattresses, framed art and small bedside tables.

Depending on how many of the 27 beds are filled, residents either get a room to themselves or share with no more than two others. Hardwood floors, dark leather couches and potted palms in the common areas contribute to the casually elegant environment indoors. Outside, clients have the opportunity to socialize or enjoy volleyball and basketball on the outdoor courts.

Though it now has a new chef, Suncoast’s marketing highlights the luxurious offerings of their former cook Diane—offerings included eggplant rolatini parmagiana, meatloaf stuffed with ham and cheese, pasta carbonara, Caesar salad and herb crusted garlic bread.

Treatment

Potential clients are medically screened before admittance. Those with significant medical needs are generally referred elsewhere, as Suncoast is not for acute medical cases. The facility does not use medication to treat addiction; potential clients on high doses of methadone or other prescription drugs who cannot safely come off those drugs must do so at a medical detox facility before being transferred back to Suncoast for further treatment. Clients don’t know how long their treatment will last when they are admitted. Generally, the policy is for people to stay until treatment providers say they can go home (usually three to four months).

Suncoast life skills training and individual therapy in addition to Narconon-based practices. The latter is composed mostly of prescribed exercise, sauna sweating, nutritional supplements and the study of literature written by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.

The exercise and sauna detox phase runs about five hours a day, and usually lasts four to six weeks. After this, individual counseling along with classroom-style study of literature makes up the remainder of treatment. There is no group therapy, only personal work and one-on-one counseling. Suncoast operates completely independently of any 12-step methods.

In addition, Suncoast seeks to create a “safe protective bubble” for clients, and encourages distance from former associations and environments. Still, long distance calls are free and visiting hours are Saturday from 12 to 10 pm for family members approved by case supervisors.

In Summary

Treatment at Suncoast is likely to appeal to those comfortable with alternative approaches, or open to the beliefs of Scientology. Potential clients should prepare to be in “the box,” as the sauna is known, for up to five hours a day for a month or more. That said, those undaunted by these factors will find a lot of positive Suncoast testimonials.
