The Basics
Sun Valley Services, Inc. is an outpatient substance abuse treatment facility started by Dr. Joseph Parham in 1993. Located in Mesa, Arizona, Sun Valley utilizes a reality therapy approach, which focuses on identifying triggers that lead to alcohol use and abuse and developing plans to avoid such occurrences in the future. In addition to alcohol abuse treatment, Sun Valley provides multiple services that treat the family members.
Treatment and Staff
Sun Valley uses an individualized approach, which includes DUI education and treatment, individual, group and family therapy and behavioral health services for individuals and families. Most clients enroll to meet court requirements for a DUI or other alcohol-related criminal offense, so a client’s program length and intensity depends on their legal trouble and degree of alcohol abuse.
Education and group therapy are 12-step focused. Clients are usually ordered to attend AA/NA, MADD and/or community service. Clients receive anywhere from 16 to 32 hours of education and treatment, including 20 hours of group therapy. Once those are completed, counselors help them with the revocation process.
Detox is not available nor is dual diagnosis support, but Sun Valley is a small facility run by substance abuse counselors who are bilingual, so classes and therapy are offered in English or Spanish and group sizes are small. The largest group sessions are six to eight clients and smaller ones with only three or four.
Extras
Sun Valley also offers programs that address issues with domestic violence and anger management, Traffic Survival School and education programs in family economics, finances and family in crisis interventions.
In Summary
Sun Valley provides not only a substance abuse treatment program and DUI education and training, it helps clients put their lives back together, setting them up to start sober lives and even drive again, thanks to the Revocation Packets and Traffic Survival School. Sun Valle is small and intimate as well as affordable. Insurance and Medicaid are not accepted, but prices are low and payment plans are offered for those who can’t afford the fees up front. Because everything is out of pocket, treatment isn’t on clients’ records, which could otherwise haunt them later in the job force or with insurance companies.
