The Basics
Since 1968, Sun Street Centers (SSC) has been providing education, prevention, treatment and recovery to individuals suffering from alcohol and drug abuse in the greater Monterey County area of California. Using evidence-based treatment methods including the Matrix Model, SSC prides itself on its proven social model developed by its founders, as well as its emphasis on compassion. SSC provides outpatient and residential treatment for those suffering from substance abuse, regardless of their ability to pay. While SSC has several facilities around the coastal Northern California area, outpatient treatment is offered exclusively in Salinas, Marina and Seaside.
Treatment and Staff
SSC employs a comprehensive, evidence-based and individualized program, Matrix curriculum is designed to give substance abusers the knowledge, structure and support that allows them to achieve long-term abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Using CBT and DBT in both the group and individual therapy settings, clients develop basic life skills with services that aim to empower men and women to stop the cycle of addiction by taking charge of their lives. The core areas addressed are early recovery skills, family education and relapse prevention.
While SSC does have a 12-step emphasis and hosts some meetings on-site, this framework is only a recommendation and not required. Most clients participate in 32 group sessions while enrolled in outpatient treatment, particularly if they are covered under Medicaid. Depending on the level of care they can afford or their insurance will allow, clients attend groups between two and four times a week and one private session. Treatment lasts anywhere from three to six months.
Dual diagnosis support is available, but medication is not administered. There are three licensed counselors on staff who specialize in drug and alcohol abuse. If clients require a more intensive level of care, staff are more than happy to provide referrals. Detox is not available at SSC’s outpatient program.
Extras
Unlike SSC’s residential treatment program, the outpatient track is co-ed. Because it’s a smaller facility, clients receive immediate attention.
SCC offers both English and Spanish speaking groups. Counseling for couples and families is also available when needed. While these are not included in outpatient treatment, SSC does offer a great deal of additional programs including DUI classes, Safe Teen Empowerment Projects, life skills classes, employee assistance programs and anti-bullying strategy classes.
In Summary
SSC is a small, individualized, evidenced-based treatment program that uses an unconventional method of care to treat those suffering from substance abuse. Unlike other outpatient treatment centers who focus a great deal on medicine and the physical approaches to recovery, SSC uses a social theory model to empower its clients.
