Located in Draper, Utah about 20 miles south of Salt Lake City, Summit Peak Counseling is a small facility owned and operated by a two-woman team of counselors, namely Tracy Harward, LMFT and Caroline Welsh, LCSW. The organization provides flexible outpatient-based counseling services to those struggling with a range of issues, specifically eating disorders and related anxiety and depression.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, all participants go through an intake and assessment process to determine their needs and their treatment history. While detox and stabilization services are not available, the counselors can make referrals to other facilities on an as-needed basis. In general, treatment programs consist almost entirely of individual therapy, though family and couples therapy options are also available.
In any event, all treatment is evidence-based and goal-focused, making use of CBT as well as other eclectic approaches. Therapy can cover many different topics including life transitions, anxiety, depression, grief issues, communication skills, life skills, intimacy issues, trigger identification and relapse prevention. As the clinic also provides support for those struggling with eating disorders, treatment groups can also focus on these issues and may include supervised meals, trips to restaurants or referrals to nutritionists as well. While 12-step participation is not strictly required in any of these programs, it may be encouraged in some cases whenever necessary. Similarly, psychiatric and medical supervision are not available although basic dual diagnosis support is.
The staff at Summit Peak Counseling consists of Harward and Welsh themselves, holding LMFT and LCSW certifications, respectively.
As mentioned, standalone family and couples counseling services are also available. As certified counselors, Harward and Welsh both have their own specialities and clients can be sorted between them as appropriate according to their needs. Similarly, those who complete a primary care regimen can work with the staff to develop discharge and aftercare plans as necessary. Spanish-speaking services are also provided.
In all, Summit Peak Counseling provides an intimate and flexible counseling experience to anyone dealing with eating disorders or moderate life distress. All care plans are individualized, include evidence-based care practices and can be made to suit any number of schedules. While those in need of more intensive outpatient services or psychiatric help may need additional aid, Summit Peak Counseling remains a good option for those seeking basic life guidance and behavioral health services.
