Akron OhioThe Basics

For over 25 years now, Summit County Public Health (SCPH) has been serving those suffering from substance abuse and addiction in and around the Akron, Ohio area. In addition to outpatient treatment and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for chemical dependency, SCPH offers a number of services and programs that are designed to protect and promote the safety, health and well-being of Summit County. Services include immunizations, healthcare for immigrants, mom groups, handicap services for children, minority health services and STD/AIDS clinics. Dedicated to providing an effective, equitable, understanding and respectful quality of care to diverse populations, SCPH doesn’t turn anyone away regardless of their ability to pay, making care accessible to all.

Treatment and Staff

SCPH is an evidence-based outpatient and IOP treatment facility serving adults and youth ages 12 and up. After a diagnostic assessment, clients are enrolled in one of five programs (contemplative, adolescent, outpatient, IOP or aftercare), depending on their individual needs. Using a 12-step approach, SCHP offers dual diagnosis support, individual therapy, group therapy, alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention education, trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, urinalysis screenings, care coordination, strength-based case management, CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

The IOP lasts 12 weeks (with three group sessions a week, each three hours long), while regular outpatient lasts eight weeks (with one three-hour group session a week). IOP clients receive one individual session a week, but standard outpatient clients may or may not receive individual therapy, depending on the need and desire of the client.

There are eight licensed counselors at SCPH, all certified in drug and alcohol abuse. Detox is not available and medications are not administered.

Extras

Confidential HIV/Hepatitis C testing and education are available to those in need as are adolescent treatment services. Because SCPH is so focused on the needs of diverse populations, services are available in the preferred language of the client whenever possible.

SCPH also runs a program called DAWN, a community-based drug overdose prevention and education program. Participants receive training in how to recognize and treat overdoses, recognize the different types of overdoses, administer intranasal Naloxone and even perform rescue breathing. Day and evening hours for outpatient treatment are offered to better accommodate those clients who have varied schedules. Transportation assistance is available upon request.

In Summary

SCPH is a 12-step based outpatient treatment facility committed to serving community members in a respectful manner that recognizes diverse cultural health beliefs and practices. Care is offered in the preferred languages of clients and health literacy is available to all who desire it. Because of a strong commitment to serving all those in need, no one is denied services—regardless of an ability to pay. Programs are based on a sliding fee scale, but Medicaid and private insurances are accepted.
