Summer Sky Treatment CenterSummer Sky Treatment Center Review

Since 1985, the Summer Sky Treatment Center (SSTC) has been offering inpatient treatment and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse. From its beautiful campus about an hour from Forth Worth in Stephenville, Texas, SSTC offers evidence-based treatment and an introduction to the 12 steps to a clientele that ranges from 13 to 70 years old.

Accommodations and Food

SSTC clients receiving residential treatment are assigned a roommate of the same gender. Each room has two twin beds and a connecting bathroom. While the facility is co-ed, the genders are separated by halls. During stay, clients are not allowed to have a cell phone or laptop of their own. Landlines are available in the bedrooms but clients need a phone card to call long distance. Phone lines are suspended during the night and automatically come on in the morning. The residents are able call during open times but will find the lines blocked during group hours.

SSTC provides clients with three chef-prepared meals a day, which are planned with the aid of a nutritionist. Snacks such as fruit, bread, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches can be found all day long in the common rooms, which feature couches, TVs and vending machines with chips, candy and soda. Tea, juice and coffee are also provided and there is an outside smoking area.

Treatment and Staff

SSTC detox lasts three to ten days and is monitored by nurses 24/7. The medical director is there for treatment at least five days a week and remains on call around the clock . During the 30 day inpatient treatment adults take part in an individualized number of group therapy sessions and AA/NA meetings on-site and may also be transported off-site for additional meetings. There is a maximum of 54 clients residing at SSTC at a time, those in detox included. Inpatient clients are expected to take part in two individual sessions a week, life skills training, relapse prevention and addiction education classes.

Clients work with LCDCs and counselor interns, and are assigned a primary counselor who is in charge of their treatment. A Master’s-level therapist is available to work with clients on grief, trauma and anger issues. Before exiting inpatient treatment, residents plan for post-discharge housing and work and have the option to continue into sober living homes arranged by SSTC.

SSTC adolescent treatment for those aged 13 to 17 is distinguished by the fact that the stay minimum is 45 days and there are separate therapeutic tracks for the male and female clients. The program offers adolescents the same recovery support as adults including CBT and a introduction to the 12 steps. It also provides an on-site accredited high school so clients may continue with their education uninterrupted.

The SSTC IOP runs three days a week for eight weeks: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 to 9 pm. The program is intended for those who live the area and can attend those three groups plus one individual session per a week.

Extras

Inpatient clients are taken to a nearby gym two to three times per week and provided with complimentary membership. Further treatment activities include equine therapy at a nearby university and a ROPES course. Acupuncture and bible study are also available.

The SSTC family program runs between 10 am and 12 pm on Saturdays.

In Summary

In its thirtieth year, Summer Sky Treatment Center continues to offer a wide variety of substance abuse treatment options at an economical cost. Based on experience, SSTC recommends a full 90 day residential treatment stay. But in offering shorter-term alternatives, it serves clients in a way that offers options for their budget and schedules. For comprehensive, affordable 12-step based treatment, this is an awesome choice.
