Sue’s Recovery HomeThe Basics

Sue’s Recovery Home is the first women’s only sober living facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. It is owned and operated by the same individuals who founded the male-only sober living, Alexander’s House. Sue’s Recovery Home offers 12-step based programs along with relapse prevention techniques and coping and life skills training. It aims to provide a safe and supportive sober living environment for adult women who have undergone and successfully graduated from a residential treatment program, or who have maintained sobriety for over 30 days and are looking for an intermittent step before going out on their own.

Accommodations and Amenities

The spacious and modern home can accommodate up to five women in private bedrooms and shared bathrooms. Boasting state of the art fixtures and appliances, the residence is fully furnished and includes cable and Internet, and living essentials such as linens, cookware, toilet paper and cleaning supplies. There are also laundry facilities on-site.

Healthy meals are prepared by an on-site chef and the clients are offered cooking classes. The food is provided by the facility and the clients take turns making meals and snacks for each other.

Rules and Regulations

Clients admitted into the program are required to attend a weekly relapse prevention group, a minimum of three AA meetings per week and weekly house meetings. Additionally, they are expected to obtain a sponsor within seven days of admission and either be employed, seeking work or enrolled in school. Once the client has gotten settled after the initial 60 days, they are able to apply for overnight stays; two a week are permitted. There is also a weeknight curfew of 11 pm and a 1 am curfew on the weekends. Any visitors have to be out of the facility by 10 pm, with the exception of the first 30 days, which is 9 pm. Overnight guests are not allowed.

Clients who come into the program with a co-occurring disorder are able to receive medication management with additional monitoring by the house manager. There are regular classes and lectures for clients including money management and job placement skills. Educational opportunities are also regularly offered.

Smoking is not allowed inside the residence but there are designated areas outside. Residents can also expect regular drug screens.

The staff of Sue’s Recovery Home consists of CADCs, peer counselors and 24-hour house managers.

Extras

The clients regularly participate in sober activities and have house movie or bowling nights, along with attending and hosting sober events in the community.

In Summary

The mission behind Sue’s Recovery Home is to help women in their first year of sobriety to develop the necessary skills and tools to hopefully stay in long-term recovery. The program allows for some freedom while providing the right amount of structure and guidance. Women in the area should consider this a viable resource for sober living after an inpatient stay elsewhere.
