studio-12Studio 12 Review

Located just the other side of the Santa Monica Mountains from Hollywood, Studio 12 bills itself as “the entertainment industry’s best kept secret.” It was opened by the Motion Picture and Television Fund in 1975, providing anonymity and individualized treatment to actors, movie execs and non-Hollywood people. Unlike many of the high profile celebrity rehabs that end up on TMZ, Studio 12 provides help without breaking the bank. The name of the program refers to the 12 steps and clients attend many AA/NA meetings during their stay.

Accommodations and Food

With more than 35 years in business, Studio 12 has a solid reputation, having helped many actors and studio executives recover from substance abuse. The 10-client program is located in a comfortable house on a residential street in the heart of the San Fernando Valley. Bedrooms are shared between two clients and include twin-sized beds, dressers and carpeting. The house also features a living room with a TV, a dining room and a kitchen.

Three meals per day are prepared on-site for residents; favorite dishes include spaghetti and meatballs, chicken wings and burgers.

Unlike some of the glamorous Malibu rehabs, this facility does not offer a state-of-the-art gym and extensive spa treatments. However, a simple weight room and a small pool can be used during free time.

Treatment and Staff

The 30-day treatment begins with an on-site, medically monitored detox. This process typically lasts between five and 10 days and costs $950 per day. From there, clients follow a schedule that includes 12-step meetings, group therapy, individual therapy, weekend activities, daily meditation and education. Group topics focus on anger management, relapse prevention, health, education and life skills. Individual therapy is done on as-needed basis while off-site AA/NA meetings are available several times week.

Studio 12 claims to have a smaller staff-to-client ratio than any other Southern California rehab, with a staff comprised of counselors and a consulting medical doctor. For those needing medication, a consulting psychiatrist is available for additional fees.

Extras

Family members can participate in the client’s treatment toward the end of the 30 days. The family program includes group therapy, individual therapy and educational lectures.

In Summary

Studio 12 combines 12-step based treatment with a family-style living environment. While the program requires hard work and focus, those who are willing to dedicate themselves to recovery have a good shot at long-term sobriety.
