Straight Talk, Inc is a behavioral health and substance abuse program in southern California’s Orange County that offers affordable care to adult men and women with HIV/AIDS. Through its residential treatment and transitional care programs, it offers 12-step meetings, individual and group counseling, psychoeducation, vocational and life skills training with extended aftercare and sober living options.
Accommodations and Food
Straight Talk’s two residential facilities, Start House and Gerry House, were both established in the early 90s. Start House offers seven beds while Gerry House offers 12. They are both co-ed, three-bedroom homes in residential neighbors of Orange County.
Programs are between three and four months long. During their stay, clients receive medical care and learn about proper nutrition, exercise and valuable life skills, like cooking. The facility provides all the meals for the house while the clients trade off preparing and serving food for one another. They also seek out employment or schooling during their stay and prepare for moving onto a transitional living facility with the assistance of the staff.
Treatment and Staff
Generally, clients begin their treatment journey at Start House and either move on to the Gerry House or into a sober living facility. At Start House, the schedule is structured so that incoming clients are able to medically and psychologically stabilize while they begin to acquire necessary skills for independent living. Gerry House is on a three-phase system that integrates evidence-based approaches into every day experiences and teaching coping skills. Both programs offer AA or NA meetings at least four times a week, connection to a sponsor and group therapy. Monthly goal sessions with a counselor focus on developing an aftercare plan. Additionally, support and resources for clients with co-occurring disorders is also available.
Treatment incorporates CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and solution-focused individual therapy. Groups provide relapse prevention methods, anger management techniques and education about the disease of addiction. Since all clients either have HIV and/or are receiving Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) by way of methadone, the aim is for them to learn how to support themselves health wise before moving onto a different location.
Family counseling services is available for all the clients and their loved ones on an individual basis. The alumni program is available to clients who have transitioned a sober living facility or are living on their own. It allows those who have graduated to become mentors to new residents, in addition to remaining in their groups and attending meetings within their own support communities.
Straight Talk, Inc is one of the only programs that caters exclusively to those with HIV and offers a judgment-free and safe living environment in which to pick up the pieces and learn to life a healthy and productive life in sobriety.
